Some of you may know about this some may not...Sean has hit a spot of poor health, since last Friday he's been suffering considerable pain, and has been very reluctant to lay down, hasn'[t wanted to eat, has been reluctant to go up single steps and jump\hop over even the lowest of obstacles. So we've been practically living in our local vets and he's spent two night in there. Anyway after visiting on Monday they kept him in and referred him to a specialist vets at Bristol who have an MRI scanner, so today I left Bideford with poor old Seaney, collecting him from the vets at 7am and driving him there for a 10am appointment, and that's where he is now. I had feared we might have had to have him PTS, and the problem was bone growth which is untreatable, however we have been lucky and the problem relates to discs, like if people slip a disc you can get the same problems in dogs. This is a treatable condition with an operation and so tomorrow that will take place for Sean and hopefully I'll be able to collect him at the weekend.
The vet said to me there isn't any real reason why discs may suddenly be a problem, he likened it to one of us getting up to get a remote control for the TV and for no apparent reason a disc goes in our back.
Either way we are very relieved that Seaney will not be leaving us now and we're looking forward to getting him home again so normal service can resume. As a consequence of this spell of ill health he has lost alot of weight and this morning at Bristol he looked like a real rescue case and not the Seaney we know, so we'll have some work to get his weight back up.
P.S. If you haven't got your Greyhound insured do it now! Don't delay, because this little episode will eat up alot of what we're able to claim for in a year, the limit being £4k, sounds like a lot but an MRI scan is £500-1000, an operation can almost be a skys the limit job. So be aware and think of your Greyhound insurance a means of long term saving.

My best wishes to Sean for a full recovery!
I can only confirm what you have said regarding insurance and how important it is. Teds recent broken toe which required two x-rays and an operation in between has amounted to over £2,500. My previous greyhound had to have an MRI plus blood tests at the RVC and her bill was in excess of £2,000.
Without insurance I wonder how many animals generally are 'sacrificed' for financial reasons. I pay £18.60 a month for my insurance and this gives me peace of mind without breaking the bank.

Hi Mark
Sorry to hear that Sean is currently out of circulation, he always looked in tip top condition so it's hard to imagine him looking as you described. Hope operation goes well tomorrow and that he will soon be back in Bideford with those who love him.
Thinking of you.

Sorry to hear that Sean has been so poorly, it must have been very worrying for you. Am so glad that it is something treatable and that he should be back to his old self soon enough.

Here's the latest from the Bristol vets caring for Sean, he had a comfortable night due to pain killers and today he had his disc op. He's clearly been OK post op since they said they'd call if there were any problems and they haven't, so the next update will come tomorrow. Hopefully I will be able to collect him at the weekend, or early next week at the latest. Although the operation will not provide an instant fix, it should correct the pain problem Sean has had within a few weeks as inflamation subsides, so we will no doubt be issued with some pain killers, and initial walks will need to be kept short, or may even have to be non-existent. You can also get info on the Greyhoundhomer Twitter account, I'm updating that as things go along you can look on the website home page www.greyhoundhomer.co.uk, and see the latest Twitter posts just below the navigation menu.

The latest update is that Sean is now back to where he was before the op, which sounds like a strange thing to say, but the recovery period is one of several weeks and the treatment is designed to let nature take it's course and the problem discs to now sort themselves out post op fixes. There was a different path that could have been used to correct the problem, however it carried greater risk and was more invasive. So fingers crossed the procedure and process runs it's course successfully. The vets he's at is the Down Veterinary Practice in Bristol, they have a lot of cases document (in quite a technical way) on their website, www.downsvets.co.uk. The practice is based in a converted three bedroom house amongst a quiet housing estate. This page www.downsvets.co.uk/veterinary-referrals/news/ contains cases they've been involved in, seems to be quite specialist stuff.
