I think many greyhound owners have experienced corns in their pets. Roni had a corn that just would not vanish. I had tried everything.
Does this sound like you? Paw wax to soften the pad. Corn remover acid. Boots. Eventually to the vets who used a scalpel to attempt removal of the corn by surgery. A month later, back it came! In desperation I even went on ebay and bought some dentist's root extractor tools (they are used in the states for dogs). Certainly better than the scalpel, but still the limp returned.
Eventually back again to another vet. This time Roni was put out and further surgery. One month later and it was back. Greyhounds love to run and Roni was getting depressed.
Six months after the first time he was knocked out I tried the vets again. One month later he was limping! It was suggested that the only cure was to remove the pad and I certainly couldn't keep on anaesthetising the poor animal. But as luck would have it I was walking him up the high street and an Irishman stopped me and asked me what was wrong with Roni. He used to have greyhounds and said the best cure was Scholls verruca patches. The pack comes with three sizes of coated patches and a further larger patch which is placed over the smaller patch to keep it in situ. They stayed on for 24 hrs and then I renewed them.
After 2 years, and lighter pockets, the corn has gone. 8 months later and it has not returned. So simple and thank God for that Irishman!!!!!

NOW I WONDER If verruca pads got rid of the corn for Roni, I know from personal experience that banana skin gets rid of verrucas in humans, would banana skin also get rid of corns in dogs? Thanks Billglass, I hope me n Cassie never have the problem, I love these sort of tips. Welcome to the Forum Yvonne n Cass

I found this very interesting Bill. Thanks for the information. I'm sure many dogs suffer with this problem. Many years ago one of our Greyhounds had a corn which was removed by the vet on two occasions, but persisted in growing back. Eventually he decided to remove the top end of her toe, which I was extremely distressed about doing, simply for a corn. He did sew the pad back on somehow and she had no further trouble, but reading this, I wish I had known of the corn pads at the time. It would have saved us all the trauma. Thank you for posting, and welcome.

Hi, The weather was wet but even so the plasters stayed on for 24hrs. When the corn raised a little I simply lightly rubbed the corn until it was level with the rest of the pad. fine sandpaper or a nail file would suffice. Then replace the plasters as per instructions. It only took me a few goes. I assume they kill the root. Hope this helps.

I don't know how long these hints and tips stay on the forum. Would it be a good idea if they could be collected (from all branches) and put in a little book/booklet and produced by the RGT and sold? It's such a shame to put any dog or human through surgery when there's an alternative. Yvonne

I will certainly give this a go. My poor Hayley has had two corns removed since October last year and she is still limping and doesn't like walking on hard ground. She also limps when she trots, without question. She is only 4 and doesn't deserve this discomfort. Thanks for the tip - I will be back to let you know how she responds to this treatment.

Has anybody else tried the verruca patches yet? Cass is holding her paw up when standing and when I saw Frankie 3 legs Dad over the park he had a look at her paw and showed me Frankies corn, and yes unfortunately we think she has one. I put a little pressure on it with my nail and she gave a yelp, mind you she can still run like a bat out of hell down the garden after the foxes!!!

Yes, we have and I marvel that Bill was able to keep the patches on. We are putting cream on the corn and filing it but Patrick hates the little bootie we bought. He's walking without limping now but nothing seems to be happening to it.
