Hello all,
Feel ready to share my news with you all. Olly is in doggy hospital at the moment having a pleural port put in to his back as has been diagnosed with mesothelioma (chest cancer). All being well with the operation he will be having his chest drained weekly and chemo direct into the chest cavity.
Hoping he reacts well to the chemo, I'm not ready to say goodbye yet. He was full of life in the run up to it and Michael and I are still very much in shock.
Thank you so much Sue Cook for all of your help and Katie, Pia and Caz for your support.
Praying for a little miracle.
Andrea

You were just in my thoughts - good luck with the chemo - dogs seem to do better on it than us humans so fingers crossed that you can enjoy Olly's company for a good while yet :-)

So sorry to hear about Olly Andrea. I hope all goes well with the operation, where is he having it done? Lyra and I are going to the Royal Veterinary College on Monday to see if they can do anything for her. They are such a worry.

Thank you everyone, very kind of you all. I'll be sure to pass on all the hugs to Olly when I collect him.
He's in RVC too Rachael. They've been very good at getting the right diagnosis and treatment, however they're definitely not cheap, it seems to go up in the thousands rather than the hundreds. Its eye watering! However, we would do anything for our babies if there's a hope of spending more time with them and they're not suffering. I hope they can help Lyra. We are under annalise in oncology.
Need to find a very good build up food for him as he's s bag of bones even though he's eating heaps of homemade liver cake and chicken. He's not really into his dry food, more of a meat boy. Any recommendation would be well received.
Thank you Andrea xx

Lou's blog has all the recipes that I cooked to tempt her appetite when she was ill.
When we've had to build up other hounds (Poppy and Ollie) the vet recommended puppy food - palatabke and calorie dense for little appetites.
Ollie doesn't eat much so he has to pack in calories so he's on full fat milk and cream but at his age I'm not worried anout his heart and whatnot.
Hope your boy comes home soon :-)

Thanks Sue, he's eating very well and giving him loads of protein but was thinking longer term and more sustainable for me when I go in hospital, so hoping there's a poorly dog food I could buy.
Poor Michael is going to have his work cut out in couple of weeks time with coming back and forth to see me in hospital and take Olly to Hertfordshire for his chemo weekly. Just trying to get everything organised now.
What a drama queen!!

I am glad you have found the RVC to be good Andrea, maybe we will cross paths on the waiting room lol! Lily's Kitchen make a food for poorly dogs and it is very good quality (has a quality price though!). Kibble that is made with fresh meat is usually much more popular than those made with dried meat. Simon's is made with fresh as is Lilly's Kitchen, Aatu, Eden, Applaws, Akela, Millie's Wolfheart. They have various protein content - Lilly's about 21%, Millie's 25-35%, Simon's 26% and the others are all 30%+. You could mix one of these kibbles with tinned Lily's Kitchen. I hope you can build him up and good luck with the chemo

I so hope the treatment works for Olly. I had dealings at RVC with Dolly, my first ever greyhound. I've got nothing but praise for them. The staff were absolutely fantastic and the vet consultant rang me every day. Although the outcome was not as I would have wished their care and compassion was so comforting.

Hi all,
Olly was back at RVC this weekend as took a turn for the worse. Feel like we are living there at the moment. He had 3.5 litres of fluid drained from his chest so going up considerably between visits. He's got his first oncology appointment tomorrow so will see what they say, so not giving up hope. Just feel helpless and want to wrap him in cotton wool, poor fella.
