We took Paddy to the vet for a check up this week, it turns out that his teeth are in quite bad shape and she recommended a scale & polish, not too outrageous at £54 but the £150 to knock him out while it's done is a bit of a killer.
Is this a standard kind of price for this kind of work, or is our vet expensive? Any advice would be appreciated...thanks!

Hi there, I think the price is about right, after spending some time working on Seans teeth myself I got our local vet to finish the job off. I can't remember the exact cost but we had a back x-ray as well since at the same time since he had a very sensitive back at the time which was fortunately proven to be nothing serious. There maybe some folks here that might know of a cheaper vet that's good. If your dog is insured you might be able to claim, but typically getting a payout for dental work is very difficult. If you have any doubts or questions that aren't answered in replies here just drop Pat an email, pat@greyhoundhomer.co.uk.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but that sounds like a pretty good quote for an anesthetic/sedation. Do contact Pat though as many greyhounds will fairly happily let you scape their teeth without any problems and she could advise you. This would be no use if he needs extractions though.

Rachael adds a good point that if the teeth don't need removal it's very true that they can be carefully scrapped and many will let you do this. Luckily Seans teeth were in good nick for his age and they just finished off the cleaning I'd been doing myself. Once you get them clean use a dog toothpaste and brush on them as often as you can and this should stop big bills in the future.

i was told princes teeth are very good. But i did ask my vets how much it would cost for them to be cleaned, he quoted me £150. just for a clean and maybe another £100 on top, if he needs any taken out depends what they find under the tartar.

To stop the plaque build up,try Fragaria available from health food shops.certainly brightens Baby's teeth up,and people always say (vet also asked what I was using)how white they are.

Thanks everyone for your replies I think he needs at least one out so I guess he'll have to be knocked out for that anyway.

Prince went for a scale and polish yesterday. and ended up having 7 teeth removed and costing me £393.63. Four of the teeth were only holding on by the tartar, so when the vet started descaling they fell out. these were his bottom front so feeling quite sad for him on those, the others were right at the back so you cannot notice them as much. We didn`t have a good night as he is still recovering from the anasthetic and was crying alot from the pain. I spent most of the night on the kitchen floor cuddling him. this morning i`ve managed to medicate him, but he was so reluctant to open his mouth bless him. Its going to take a few more days to recover from this.

Poor Prince - hope he feels better soon. It is amazing how they adapt to losing their teeth though - Poppy only had 2 teeth left but could gum her way through a pig's ear like a good 'un!

Sorry to hear about Prince, poor lad. I'm sure he'll be right as rain soon, as Sue says they can cope with little or no teeth, but it's horrible when they're recovering from anaesthetic , or feeling a bit poorly, but cuddles always help!
Greys really do seem very prone to bad teeth, some more than others. Despite spending a fortune on dental products and her having a dental before she came to us, Nellie's teeth are not good.

Hi Diane,
Oh no, poor Prince, what a little poppet to go through all that, no wonder he feels poop. I'm sure with lots of mummy hugs he will be back to full health and getting used to his new gums !
What a shock for you though, both financially and emotionally.
Hope he's ok soon Andrea

Very sorry to read of Prince's mouth teeth problems - and your wallet problems. Double ouch! Hope he will soon be back to himself. What a lovely mummy laying on the floor with him, he is a lucky boy, even if he doesn't feel it right now.
I am wondering if Kitty has a tooth problem. She is eating fine but I notice she is dribbling a lot and seems to keep licking her lips. Guess trip number 2 to the vets is in order. Deep joy! He did look in her mouth last time and muttered something about tartar but didn't say much else. Although I have to say I was sceptical as to whether he even knew she was a dog, never mind what breed :-) Think I will ask to see a different vet this time.
Hope you don't have to spend another night 'on the tiles' x

last night was the first nights sleep we both had in 2 days. prince was constantly whining all day and night, so we took him back to the vets and she had to give him tramadol which is a mild sadative with a bit more pain relief. prince was more sensative to the pain than we thought so this may take a little longer for him to recover.

Reading about the poor houndies having to have their teeth dealt with has prompted me to try Fragaria again. A friend ordered mine from petmeds.co.uk, they cost £6.99 no p&p. They are made by Dorwest herbs and are Fragria 3c, the last time I used them they were 6c and not Dorwest. This time I'm putting 1 in Cassies food and 1 in her drinking water. After only 4 days I can see the differnce in the tartar build up, I do give her pigs ear strips, rolled fish skins, dried tripe strips or Tesco dental chews so hopefully her teeth will clean themselves.
