Having adopted a lovely quite big greyhound 'boy' a few months ago, we wondered if any other greyhound owners out there already look after other people's greyhounds for holidays in exchange for looking after each others in their homes (at a minimal cost? We know we can take him to self catering holidays (loves the car), but suppose we wanted a week abroad we'd prefer not to put him in kennels for a week for more than a night or two. We'd be happy to 'board' a greyhound or two for a week or so as long as they all got on together. We would leave him with relatives if that were possible. So we're thinking a possible 'baby sitting circle' for greyhounds!? Be greatful for any news on our suggestion or ideas.

It's a great idea - unfortunately we're out in Surrey so we're a bit too far to take part but it would be such a useful scheme.
We do have an offer from a greyhound-mad friend that if we want to go away, she'll move into our house to look after our three.....and bring her six with her! I'm not sure that the house/garden would survive the invasion :-)

Hi there
I recently looked after a greyhound homed out of Ockendon. I had him for two weeks while his owner was away on business. He settled in really well with my own grey, my yorkie cross and my daughter's staffie pup, and not forgetting .........................the grandchildren!
Of course we had all met up prior to him coming to stay with us.
You can see some of the pictures I took during his stay. Go to General, click on thread Cyril's Wish for the 1st set. 2nd set is again under General, but click on Back on line.

yes i think that is a great idea, a greyhound sitting service, the last thing any one wants to do is go backwards by putting them in kennels while you go away. my friend who owns a greyhound is looking after mine while i`m away for a week, i have introduced mine into her home and he is happy staying there with her greyhound so hopefully all should go well while i`m away.

I wonder if this is something we could set up on the 'members only' part of the forum (? for Mark) - wouldn't want to tell the world when my house was likely to be empty (not that it would be easy to work out but there are some clever criminals out there).
We had a chat about this and although we're in Surrey we're only an hour's drive from Ockenden - we'd be happy to board a hound, though I can't imagine that anyone would want to board our whole pack in return - especially with Lou's daily tablet count now up to 16!
We do fall in love with the hounds really quickly though - you'd have to be prepared for some sobbing 'goodbyes' - unlike our local boarding kennel where they just say "that'll be hundreds of pounds - byeee"!

Thanks a lot for your replies last October. Apologies for not replying earlier - I've had difficulties getting into the site. My lack of IT skills, I think! It's good to know that some of you think a 'babysitting circle' is a good idea. I also realise that any arrangements would have to be made 'securely' to avoid circulation of people's details. Our Billy Bullseye did spend 4 nights at the rescue kennels he came from last November. He was off his food and had 'the runs' for a couple of days, but was otherwise OK. His life with us is so cushy it must have been a bit of a jolt for him, although he remembers and likes the people at the kennels.
So, I still think the possibility of greyhounds staying in someone else's home could be a better option. I'm still not sure who I'm replying to here as my computer is still being a bit awkward. I will try again if no responses from anyone!
Happy New Year to you and all the greyhounds!
Carol

Hi Carol we have just spent 3 weeks away at christmas and my two go to Ockenden kennels they where also there for two weeks in august, when we get them back they have the runs for two days and back to normal they stay with a lovely lady and they see her several times a year, it would be great to be in a circle with other greyhound owners looking after each others hounds. I know a lot of people say they cant put there hounds in kennels and i understand that speaking from experince abbey loves it she gets to mix with other hounds daisy doesnt eat for the first two days but then she is ok and they let her in the paddock where she gets a good run which she likes wil be interesting to see what others think verna x

after a week staying at my friend and her greyhound, i was well looked after, and made myself at home.but i did miss my mum, and by gum did i give her the evil eye for leaving me, so i was spoilt and reasured they won`t do it again.....................well not for a few months anyway. but i do like my creature comforts and won`t give my mum any excuse to take me to any kennels.
