Hi Carol we have just spent 3 weeks away at christmas and my two go to Ockenden kennels they where also there for two weeks in august, when we get them back they have the runs for two days and back to normal they stay with a lovely lady and they see her several times a year, it would be great to be in a circle with other greyhound owners looking after each others hounds. I know a lot of people say they cant put there hounds in kennels and i understand that speaking from experince abbey loves it she gets to mix with other hounds daisy doesnt eat for the first two days but then she is ok and they let her in the paddock where she gets a good run which she likes wil be interesting to see what others think verna x

Hello Daisy, Sean and Abbey's mum. Thanks a lot for info re Ockenden Kennels. Interesting info thank you. Did your greys originally come from the Ockendon Kennels, ie is it also a rescue centre for greys? Its just that some greyhound kennels won't take greys that weren't originally homed from their kennels because they like to know about them before they board them for a 'holiday'. Wait to hear from you. Carol (Billy's 'Mum' !)

Hi Carol, I only have two girls Daisy and Abbey, Sean belongs to Mark and Emma, I used to look after sean while Mark and emma where at work. we got daisy 3 yrs ago from luton and abbey 3 years from ockendon. I dont want to cause a debate or any arguements of pros and cons for hounds going back to kennels the reason i put my hounds in kennels is because i know they are well looked after the lady who looks after them knows about hounds as its her bussiness she is very good with them and they like her and are happy to see her when we are at ockendon kennels. Also im not sure i could trust a friend to look after my hounds as none of them have hounds and dont really know about hounds. last year we was away in august for 2 weeks and they were at the kennels and were fine daisy settles in quickly and doesnt eat for 1 day Abbey takes a few days to settle in and eats her dinner. when we get them back they have runny poo for 2 days ( you can take your own food) we dont. we bath them check for fleas etc and its like they have never been away daisy does some time give that look of where have you been but shes fine. cant really think of any thing more to say only it works for me and sending your hound back to a kennel wont work for every one for me personally hounds are used to kennels they know whats it about where our other dog tessa( lercher) hated the kennels she would never walk in had to be led in. hope this helps Verna x p.s if you want you hound spoiled send to Alison she sleeps on the sofa while frank as the bed to himself, cooks for him orders out food for him and will spoil your hound rotten lol
xx

Message for Verna and anyone else who has kindly commented on a possible babysitting circle. I've got some annoying 'cookies' on my laptop and I'm not sure if my replies are getting through.
I would be interested also to hear about the Ockendon kennels Verna. I don't know how you can pass the details to me, any suggestions please?
Also interested whether anyone else would like to take part in such a scheme. We live in the Chelmsford area.
Thank you
Bye for now
:-/Carol (and 'Billy') (Billyboy3)

I think a greyhound baby sitting circle is a fab idea.
We went to a well known professional animal sitting service when we first got our boy Dillon. A man came (allegedly with experience of dog handling). We gave him strict instructions on what Dillon ate and left a turkey leg for his treat as we were going to be away all day. We explicitly told the man to cut it up for him. We also had to feed the man (I'd cooked a chicken, left salads and cake and wine for him), we left a selection of daily papers and a couple of DVD's for him. We subsequently left home at around mid-day to go to an event.
When we got back at around 9pm Dillon, who usually went mental when we got in, was very subdued. We had a brief chat with the man, asked if he had given Dills his turkey and he said yes he had. Pete asked where the bone was and he said in the rubbish bag and that he would take it out with him.
When he left, Pete said he was a bit suspicious and checked the bag - no bone. We then phoned the man who admitted he had given Dillon the whole turkey leg in one piece, bone and all.
Dillon spent a very uncomfortable and very poo-ey three days and for the privilege of having the scare of that, we had to pay£70 plus VAT !!!!!!!!! We complained and the company couldn't even be bothered to reply to our letter.
Greyhounds are so special - they need a different kind of care, hence I think other owners and specialist kennels are the only places for our babies.

I think at some stage we have all had a few no no's with people who look after dogs, we had one that was supposed to let them out a certain hours but did not and the dogs were crossed legged and upset when we got home. If anybody wants the kennel number at ockendon please ring also if you are in the cambridge area cromwell kennels is run by friends of mine Paul and paula, they have greyhounds themselves and are truely wonderful with them, they would really be spoilt, i will get mark to put the link to them on the links page pat
