Almost 2 years ago Jack had to have a front outter toe removed. Got on fine until October where he broke the last good outter toe. 4 weeks ago he started hobbling on walks. 3 weeks ago he was attacked by my mates dog and needed stitches in his mouth all healed ok. Hobbling still every other day or so though. Took to the vets and was given pain killers then Monday last week he came down with a horrible tummy bug and was passing blood being sick. Hooked up to a drip Thursday and is now on the mend. Apart from this bad leg/foot is still an issue. there is no swelling or any sign of corns. Next step is xrays but want him 100% incase of sedation. I am so worried it's something terrible. Has anyone else had issues like this with 3 toes?

I have not come across this problem myself, but I so hope another member can help you and reassure you. Have you expressed your worries to the vet?
Please do let us know how he gets on, and I wish you a happy outcome.
Much love

Just an idea, could it be a touch or rheumatisiam, it has been cold lately, how old is he?

Hi jo, he will be 8 in April. I started him on yumove a month ago but stopped with his bad tummy. Vet is aware but again with the bad tummy it got put on hold. She has felt and pulled all up his leg. The only time he shouted at her, was at his shoulder but he did it on the other shoulder too. He barely holds his bad paw up its more of a hobble. I spoke to the receptionist today as if he is xrayed i would love to avoid sedation. I know its unlikely any vets here but I am a worrier and love the boy more than anything! He has had so much bad luck. With the rest he has had and painkillers, I would hope to see improvements

I feel so sorry for you as I know how much he must mean to you, and it is such a worry when they are unwell and cannot tell you what it wrong.
Please do not feel worried about sedation though, I am sure it will be only for a short while and it isn't like a long period of time when they need to operate, and he is still young.
I so hope someone can come back to you on the forum to reassure you, but please do let me know how he gets on, I will be thinking of you both and would love to hear all went well.
Much love
Jo and Ollie

By the way, he is a lovely looking boy!

Hi Linzi the bad tummy bug is goimg about at the moment, all my six have had it as well as the cough which is also doing the rounds, mine are all on the mend, but as far as the toe is concerned have you checked that he has nothing in the pad, soak the foot in warm salt water for as long as possible and see if there is a small puncture wound in the pad, the pad does close over if something goes in it.Where abouts are you ?, i have the number of some vets they try not to sedate unless it is not possible to xray. pat

Hi Pat I have heard of a few poorly dogs now so my mind is at rest about the sickness. I am slowly introducing his regular feed back now. And his poos look like poo again. Poor lad has lost a fair bit of weight though. As for soak no I have not tried that. I do look at his paws daily though and gave them a little squeeze, the problem is he has never been a fan at having his feet touched. When he broke his toe though he got awful damage on his leg from the bandages, I actually moved vets because they had not done it right, his dew claw was not padded so that dug a hole in his leg and his tendons were showing on one side.
I am also going to find some dog safe ink or something to get a print as he looks like his is not really weight bearing on the toe that broke. His middle toes tend to spread out more that before. We are in Leighton buzzard beds. Our new vet is calling today to discuss x ray without sedation, god I will even stand in the room and hold him if need be! (Doubt they would let me) it maybe the old vet but last few times he was sedated it took hours and hours to het him round so does make me worry. Plus all he has been through

Hi Linzi the spread on the middle toe is because the outer toes hold the middles in place, it takes at least 12 weeks for the bone to set properly and longer than that for the dog to realise that it is not painful any more,he will probably limp thinking the toe still hurts and more so when it is cold or on concrete. They loose weight very quickly with kennel sickness, one of mine lost 3 kilos in 4 days, but saying that they put it back gradually, but look a mess in the mean time. pat

Jack has had his x rays of chest and shoulder. They were not able to do an armpit angle as his was awake. No nasties on bone or in chest could be seen. He has been put on higher painkillers and steroids. If it gets worse or no better we will be passed to a specialist for better scans etc. Can breath better now but hope mystery gets solved x

Do be careful with the stronger pain killers. Our Roma had a similar episode of limping and diagnosis seemed to follow the same pattern as Jack. The stronger pain killers caused inflammation of the bowel. Watch his output carefully.
It would seem the root cause in Roma's case was a corn on the site of a thorn which got lodged in the pad that was surgically removed a couple of years ago. The corn was removed. It took several months after removal for her to walk normally.
Wishing Jack A speedy recovery.

I am so glad that nothing awful showed on the X-rays, and I can imagine how worried you were waiting on the results. I hope things will be better for you and Jack very soon, could he have somehow dislocated a joint. I have heard a case recently where someone dislocated a joint in the hand and even though it was xrayed the dislocation was not picked up be several consultants, but then again I would have thought he would be in terrible pain if this was the case.
Please let us know how he gets on, I just want to read an email saying he is well and all is sorted.
Much love
Jo and Ollie

So sorry you and Jack are going through this, Linzi.
Thank god it was noting sinister, let's hope the vets will put him right very soon, poor lad. It is horrible when they're ill.
