It's been a bad day for Trix. She somehow managed to escape from our garden - still not sure where - and ended up at the vets having major surgery. She has a tear in her sternum whereby her chest muscles petruded. As I write this, she has undergone an operation and may be allowed home today or if not tomorrow. She has a drain in place and one of those hat thingys. I've only had the hounds a week and to top it all, it's my son Tom's 11th birthday and it's not been a good day. Trix is his dog and thankfully she will make a full recovery. We have gone over our garden with a fine tooth comb and still none the wiser. That's been my dogs day.

I am so sorry to hear about Trix. Lets hope she makes a full and speedy recovery. My dog Ted is a real Houdini even to the point of climbing out of an open car window so check to see if she went over the fence. or whatever, as they can be very agile if needed.

I'm so very sorry to hear about Trixie, but glad to hear she will be fine. Accidents happen and usually at the worst or most inconvenient times. Try to enjoy the rest of your sons birthday and give him many birthday wishes from us . and of course lotsof hugs to Trixie

So sorry to hear about Trixie's misadventures - I'm pleased that she's going to be ok.
I hope that your son can still enjoy his birthday - it is, after all, a great introduction to greyhound ownership - ours have always managed to cut themselves and be down the vet within days of arriving - I think they drunk on love and freedom!
Hugs to all...

So sorry to hear about Trixie and hope she makes a full recovery. Darcy has escaped twice (once when I got a little complacent and left the gate open too wide when I bought shopping in, and once when a couple of fencing panels fell in overnight). Fortunately we managed to get him back before he'd done himself any damage, but I felt really sick with the thought of what could have happened.
Hopefully after your baptism of fire all will be plain sailing from now one. Please give your son my best wishes and sympathy for his not-so-good birthday.

Hope Trix gets well soon! Might she have gone over a boundary rather than found a way through it? I remember once at the kennels Greyhoundhomer used to be in one dog managing to jump and climb a 6ft mesh fence and get out. No harm caused fortunately, and there have certainly been high jumpers in there as well. I think I'm correct in saying that a Greyhound held the highest jump of any dog for a long time. ( www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/dedication/highest-jump-by-a-dog) Sean got out once our neighbour has yet to fully secure his boundary, however I found him standing at our front door waiting to be let in. Fortunately for us he's not a wanderer or a wilful escape artist, but these moments are certainly heart stoppers!

Good evening all. Firstly, thank you all very much for your wonderful birthday wishes to Tom. It was a long day for all of us and very worrying. Trixie came home late Friday and has 2 drains fitted and major stitch work. The drains will be removed tomorrow and the stitches in 10 days time. She is eating well and plodding slowly around the garden. We found a small gap between our neighbours/our fence and can only presume she got out there. There is a lot of sharp objects his side which could have caused the tear in her sternum. The vet said that she impaled herself and by the look of her injury had to pull herself off the item to release herself thereby pulling her chest muscles through the gaping wound. She's fine now and sleeping with Bright. Thank you all for your kind support (AGAIN). xxxxx

Quite right Pat, I know of someone who got a greyhound from a charity which didn't provide insurance for the first month and the dog went through a window and cost thousands! Even if you insure them as an owner they are sometimes not covered for the first 30 days so Pet Plan is ace!

Hi Jeanette, oh my, just seen your update, how horrific, it's amazing how strong they are. She sounds like she's on the mend and in the right place.
Talk about a stressful and eventful first week.
I truly hope it all calms down and you can get into a little routine for your own sanity.
Take care x
