Last November Newark & Sherwood Council arrived to repair the drive to Crossing Cottage (which they own as an access road). They did the work using very rough stones reclaimed from old tarmac, which can contain crushed glass. Since this has been done we have been in contact with them on several occasions to complain that the surface is clearly unsuitable for the dogs to walk on and can cause injury.
The council’s response has been that the drive is suitable for pedestrians and vehicles. However it is clearly not ‘fit for purpose’.
Since the work was done we have had to have small stones removed from our greyhounds’ paws by vets on many occasions. Then, last week, we actually lost one of our beautiful greyhounds. In the vet’s opinion a stone had fragmented in her paw causing an infection. Despite immediate treatment, we were unable to save her.
She was just four years old. Her life could have been saved if the council had accepted our request for the drive to be re-laid with a suitable non-abrasive surface. Our greyhounds are now wearing Therapaw Boots to protect their paws.
We are now petitioning the Council to re-surface the driveway to save any more of our dogs suffering. You can help by signing the e-petition on the Nottinghamshire County Council website which can be found here petitions.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/protectourpaws/. Alternatively you can download a copy of the petition and ask people to sign it.
Nationally The Retired Greyhound trust is helping us to fight the battle. The more signatures we are able to collect the more will be able to do to ensure that the issues are highlighted to our local councils. If we get enough signatures they will have to meet with us to discuss the issues.
Thank you from all the greyhounds at Crossing cottage Kennels, Retired Greyhound Trust East Midlands and Nottingham Branch.
