2020 Roundup
Like everyone else, we were hugely disappointed to hear that we’d been placed in tier four less than a week before Christmas. We couldn’t help but think back to Christmas Day 2019 and how different it would be this year.
Last year On Christmas morning a number of volunteers assembled to walk the hounds, give them their Christmas presents, drink mulled wine, eat mince pies and plan for the year ahead. This year walking has been temporarily halted at the kennels and there will be no festive gathering. However a batch of liver cake is en route to the kennels for Christmas day as well as other donated treats so the dogs will be well looked after by the lovely kennel staff on the day.
Glum as we may feel now, we have to remember that In 2019 we were delighted to have homed 89 dogs, and we set ourselves what we thought was an ambitious target to home 100 dogs in 2020.
The first three months started well with the number of hounds homed up on the previous year. We thought we were on track to reach our target. Then came lockdown and we thought our plans had flown out of the window. However, reserved dogs had their homing date brought forward and the number of enquiries rocketed. By adopting new ways of working we managed to successfully home dogs throughout lockdown.
As we end of 2020 we have homed over 160 hounds which is a fantastic result for the year and really, that’s what it’s all about, finding homes for the hounds.
At the beginning of lockdown in March we appealed for people to donate the cost of a cup of coffee. As ever, people went above and beyond, with at least one person donated the monthly cost of their train fare to London!
We only managed to do a few boot sales during the summer as all the normal fund raising events were cancelled, so many thanks for your support during the year. From online quizzes to our recent raffles, people have contributed in so many ways and we are truly grateful for your help.
We also need to thank those who donated duvets and treats for the hounds in our care as these are much appreciated by the dogs.
Thanks also go to our wonderful adopters, Kennel staff and volunteers, without you we could not have homed so many lovely hounds this year.
Fingers crossed that 2021 brings a return to something like normal. In the meantime have a great Christmas and New Year.
Stay safe everyone.
