So Lily has been home two months! Lily is my first dog and our first greyhound. Just thought I'd share what we've learnt so far, for anybody thinking about adopting a greyhound I'm positive we have much more to learn but these are the things that have stood out to us so far!
-When your greyhound has more coats than you, they probably have enough!
-if you live in a city, then winter is a great time to adopt as the parks are virtually empty allowing your dog to settle into their local walks without the crowds of sun worshippers that summer brings.
-for the first few weeks give your greyhound space and time. Let them come to you for fuss and cuddles. Ask your family, friends and strangers to do the same when first meeting them, we found explaining to people she's like a shy child seemed to work a treat.
-even though your greyhound is bombproof in the day, they can still be scaredy cats on night walks for the first few weeks. They learn quickly though
-greyhounds are kookie! Lily walked confidently past noisey building sites, sirens and busy trainlines but when an empty burger box got caught by the wind and blew towards her you'd think she was being chased by a lion!!
-never be worried to ask owners to keep their bouncy barking loose dogs away, obviously in the friendliest manner and always thank them. I wish we'd done this a little more in the first week.
-Get used to dog owners shouting over "they're fine, they only want to play!", when their dog bounds over barking. Replies that work quickly are "I know they are, your dog is lovely, but our dog is on a lead and she is nervous of loose dogs". It saves a lot of time with owners waffling on about their own dogs before they actually take action!
-greyhounds are magnets to the loveliest people, enjoy chatting with complete strangers on walks and down the pub about your shared love for greyhounds.
-muzzles are you and your dogs best friend in the first few months. It means you can relax meeting other dogs, cats, foxes and squirrels until you know them inside out. The worst part is some people asking if she bites, get use to patiently chatting to people and explaining no she doesn't bite it's just because we're getting to know her around small furries and being responsible owners.
-cook your own doggie biscuits/treats. It's so quick and easy and more importantly much much cheaper than buying them!
- If you're a first timer like us.. Spend time to really think about your home and lifestyle so you can give Dunton staff as much detail as possible about the home you can offer. They are all experts and their incredible knowledge to match you perfectly with a hound is really priceless. Also knowing they're at the end of a phone with all their experience and knowledge if you have any questions, is also priceless.
-greyhounds are the loveliest, sensitive, gentle and sweet hearted dogs. Prepare for your heart to be melted every single day.
