Hi there quick question I'm hoping for help on. We are wanting to add some mince to Sonny's complete dry feed rather than canned food. I've been looking at natures menu mince but assuming that mince for humans is pretty much the same and so could just give him that (raw or cooked). Any advice gratefully received!! thanks

Hi Nicky
Glad to read Sonny has settled down well to life in B. Although I did your home inspection I had never actually seen a picture of him until you posted one on the Forum. What a handsome boy, a real crowd puller.
I feed my girl Cara on dry food with a sprinkling of corn oil. I never use canned food. Sometimes the dry food is mixed with chicken I have cooked and others with leftovers of meals I have prepared myself which are not 'fatty'. This week that has included spagbol, casserole cooked with mushooms/carrots and sweet and sour chicken - the bowl is alway licked clean at the end of every meal. This works for us, she is not overweight, has a nice glossy coat and looks good. I also give her a cod liver oilcapsule every day which she loves to chew.

Thanks Pat! Sweet and sour chicken? What an exotic hound Sonny turns his nose up at biscuits on their own and I don't like giving him canned stuff, except oily fish sometimes. I've not heard of corn oil - will look into that.

Tinned Tuna and Mackeral also go down well mixed with in with biscuit. I use Sainsburys own brand Corn Oil.

We have always added a small amount of good quality tinned food ( Lily's kitchen, barking heads, nature diet etc) or cooked mince/ offal ( Turkey beef liver etc from the supermarket) or oily tinned fish to bens dry food. Also some lightly cooked vegetables or cucumber. Bowl is always clean and no bad tummy.

When we had Seaney we used to mix Natures Menu things in with his food, although we cooked the mince we bought with a little gravy to maintain moisture rather than fed it raw. We used to make up about 1 kilo per time and use it in his feed over a period of a few days. He also had fish as well same as Pat was feeding really. He was a fussy old so and so though and always made us work hard to get him to eat well. We also used to cook up low cost sausages and burgers sometimes. Before prices went berserk we used to just buy 1 kilo mince beef packs from either a supermarket or our local butcher and cook them up.
Also worth considering checking out, if you can get a Costco (or A N Other wholesaler) account they often do good prices for bulk buying things like Mince Beef packs, sausages and so on. You just need a means of freezing them. I'm with Bookers since we don't have a local Costco.

Thanks for all the advice everyone - very helpful! Is it best to cook mince (natures menu or otherwise). I know you can feed it raw but wonder about risk of worms....
