hi all, dont want to cause a panic but..... my friends dog (jessie) had to have a lump removed last week(jessie's ok now!) today they went back to the vets for a checkup and he told her to get jessie wormed as there is a worming disease going around essex (in dogs only! ) according to the vet a 18month old pup passed away from this worm thing within 4 days of getting it. We explained that our dogs are wormed every 3 months and he strongly told us to re worm them just incase!! We have wormed all of our dogs, and the one that our vet suggested was "milbemax". hope this has helped, and hasnt scared anyone!!! :-)

No, all breeds and dogs are liable to get it at the moment. I have just returned from my vets and it is an ongoing problem.

i have spoken to all three vet practices that we use and not one of them or the gbgb know anything about this. so if you could find out any details of what the problem is or what it is called i can check with the gbgb and find out solutions ect thanks

I think it might be lung worm Cassie's talking about. I remember seeing an article in our local paper about it a while ago, a vet said he'd had 5 cases of it in a year, the only cases he'd ever had since he started practicing. Apparently slugs and snails are carriers, so don't let your dogs drink out of puddles and water hanging around in your garden. The disease in dogs is called Angiostrongylosis if you want to look it up, it is curable if caught quickly enough. Yvonne

Hi Yvonne, if it is lung worm , then i have always been aware of that ,as we once had a professor come to visit us and check the dogs eye sight because if dogs are not regulary wormed ,there is one worm that effects the eyesight as dogs get older, he told us to always worm dogs every three months if possible, as there are several worm infections that are quickly cured if you worm regulary but cause really bad problems if not caught quickly and one was the lung worm and as you say it is caught by snails ect. About twenty years ago i had a friend who lost all her pups from her litter and this was because they were reared in a field with loads of snails and slugs. Not a nice thought at all.We were lucky as all our dogs tested had no eyesight problems but i am very aware of worming regulary. Thanks for your help it is very useful especially to new owners

No Cassie don't be sorry, it may not be lung worm. It's just that I read about lung worm in our local paper and at least you will have made people aware of it now. It's good to share Yvonne

Hi Cassie it is always good to be on the alert and make other people aware that there is something going around, if it saves one dog that is fantastic so dont ever be afraid to let people know, better to be safe than sorry pat

for those who use Drontal plus - note it doesn't list lungworm as one of the worms it treats - here is a link to the data sheet www.noahcompendium.co.uk/Bayer_plc/Drontal_Plus_Tablets/-23597.htmlMilbemax and Panacur, as mentioned will both treat lungworm The only other licensed product is Advocate spot on, which will also do fleas, mites and lice as well. hope this info helps Jennie
