Narrow boat 'Indigo Dream' to take part in the BCN 24 Challenge to raise funds for Retired GreyhoundsOn the 24th & 25th of May Sue and Richard, owners of the narrow boat 'Indigo Dream', will be taking part in a 24-hour boating marathon around the Birmingham Canal Navigations (BCN). Narrow Boats will be competing to cruise as much of the BCN in 24 hours as they can with points allocated for locks, and less popular parts of the canal. In 2011 when Sue & Richard took part they came 3rd overall in the event, this year they're hoping to go two better! Sue and Richard will be taking part in this event to raise money for Greyhoundhomer & Perry Barr RGT. If you would like to sponsor Sue and Richard (and their dogs who will also be taking part in the event) then you can do so by clicking on the logo below. You can also sponsor Sue & Richard by texting BCNS88 £2, BCNS88 £5 or BCNS88 £10 to 70070. About Sue & RichardSue and Richard have been regular supporters of the Retired Greyhound Trust and Greyhoundhomer, and in previous years have run cruises on their narrow boat to raise funds for us. The cruises were very popular and raised a lot of money for us. Richard also obtained a donation to us from one of the companies involved in constructing the Olympic Games site. Further information about this event and Indigo Dream, can be found here: indigodream.wordpress.com.

Wow, our sponsorship has just passed the £600 mark - just £400 to go to our target - can you help us to get there....and beyond??
To those that have sponsored us already, thank you - it's much appreciated and will be a real motivation for us to keep going for the win - keep your fingers crossed :-)

With just 5 days to go we're almost at our target - just another £200 to go - though we'll go beyond our target if we can!
So that's £800 guaranteed for the greyhounds waiting for their forever sofa - can we make it more?!

Exciting news - we've had a surprise donation which has taken us up to, wait for it, £1,500 - whoo hoo... And we have pledges for at least £100 on top of that - we're humbled by people's kindness. The crew is just limbering up for the trip up to the boat and the 5-hour cruise to our starting point - the greyhounds have been declared match fit despite corns, ripped dew claws and all round training-fatigue :-) Fingers crossed that we can keep them fit until the start! :-) So, from 8am tomorrow you can follow our progress on the blog - www.indigodream.wordpress.com or on facebook or twitter

Great news! We made it - our BCN Challenge went exactly to plan - the rules/scoring are very complicated so we won't know whether we've won for a few weeks yet, but wherever we are in the rankings, I can honestly say that we could not have done any more :-)
Here's the summary:
Human Crew: Sue (hu-mum to Ty and Ollie), Richard, Sarah (hu-mum to Miffy, Big Sid, Henry, Archie, Herbie, Eddie, Bertie, Rosie; foster-mum to Rocky) and Christine (whose daughter has 3 greyhounds)
Greyhound Crew: Henry, Archie, Herbie and new girl Rosie
Cruising Hours: Saturday - 8am to 11pm; Sunday - 5am - 2pm
Total Cruising time: 24 hours
Distance covered: 60 miles
Locks done: 79
Sponsorship so far, wait for it, £1700 - and that's before gift aid AND we have a few pledges still to come in!
We''ll be splitting the money equally between Greyhoundhomer and RGT Perry Barr, who are local to the Challenge.
It was an amazing event and we got very, very, very wet (so wet, might as well have jumped in the canal and had done with it!) - if it weren't for the sponsorship we might have given up and gone to the pub at Saturday lunchtime but we kept going through every shade of rain as well as thunder and lightning!
The greyhounds, of course, did a marathon snooze and stayed warm and dry indoors - when they did get a bit damp on the essential walks, we were very careful to towel them down and make sure they were warm - while being freezing cold and dripping wet ourselves :-p
We'll gather the last few donations in over the next couple of weeks - hopefully we'll be able to publish the Challenge results and the final sponsorship total soon :-)

We've just had the results of the BCN Challenge and Indigo Dream came THIRD - again!
Actually, it's a great result - the rules this year meant that any boat less than 70' long was unlikely to win - ours was the only 60' boat in the top six, and there were 39 entries this year!
But the BIG figure is our fundraising total - £1870 before gift aid - it's a massive total and we're still hoping that the results will encourage the few donations that we need to take that up to £2,000. So that will be £1000 to Greyhoundhomer and £1000 to RGT Perry Barr, who came out in the rain to cheer us on during the Challenge.
