Paddy was very naughty yesterday. Whilst walking our local fields, we saw a Muntjac deer run-out from the hedge and across the field. Unfortunately, we were too slow to grab Paddy before he took off after it. He chased the poor thing for some time backwards and forwards across the field, totally unheading of our calls. We felt awful for not controlling him and scaring the poor thing.
Fortunately, the deer got away eventually and Paddy returned absolutely exhausted. It was much faster and longer than he would normally run. We went home straight away at a slow pace and stopped to give him a drink a few times. It was quite windy yesterday and he shivered a few times.
After we got home, he flopped on his bed and after a little while he started to cough and has been doing so intermittently ever since. He ate his tea and breakfast ok and his toilets are fine.
We think the cough was probably brought on by the exertion and possibly from getting chilled afterwards. Has anybody else had similar experiences with their hounds? Any recommendations on what we could do to help him? He is otherwise ok in himself.
Obviously, if it persists we'll be going to the vet.
