Hello Everyone,
It’s me Lurch and I thought it was time to give you an update about what I have been up to during August – It’s been busy!
I started off going to the Heavy Horse Show at Orsett. Me and Mum got up early as Blaze and Shadow’s mum Katie was giving us a lift and we didn’t want to be late. Mum prepared her lunch and packed my treats for the day. She had also made some Banana and Honey dog biscuits to sell and they passed the taste test
I was a bit nervous getting in the car as I hadn’t been in one for a while and poor Mum and Katie had to lift me in. I laid straight down and we were on our way. I arrived at the ground and Blaze and Shadow were already there so I had some friends whilst the RGT team set up out stall to sell some goodies and make money for Greyhoundhomer. Mum took me for a walk around the ground as I was very nervous because it was all new to me and my legs were a bit wobbly. It took me a while to settle down but after lots of fuss and encouragement I got there in the end.
Lots of people came and visited us throughout the day and I got loads of treats including some of Twig and Olly’s homemade ones. The cheesy ones are my favourite! It was a long day but after my wobbly legs stopped I was okay and had a great day out. Greyhounds got lots of interest both at the stall and whilst we were walking around. As I was well behaved Mum said I could start going to more shows so we did.
I then went to Tesco at Rainham for a meet and greet. I got straight into Mum’s car in the morning and went to help out. There had been one on Friday too but Mum was at work so we couldn’t do both. We stood at the front of the store and I got so many people coming to stroke me – I loved it! I had a slight nervous moment but once I got into the routine I just laid down on the blanket Pat gave me and had a snooze. I was even lucky enough to be given a bone by one of the people shopping at Tesco but I saved it until I got home.
Our next big weekend was August Bank Holiday at the Havering Show. Mum spent all of Saturday afternoon making homemade dog biscuits whilst I chilled out in the kitchen watching them cook. We were up nice and early on the Sunday morning and packed all our things we needed for the day. We collected Mum’s sister on the way and went to Harrow Lodge. Blaze and Shadow were there too and we all went for a walk to check out the surrounding area. When we got back to the stall Blaze and Shadow went up onto the trailer. Mum tried to get me on there too I looked at the stairs and though no I’m not doing it so Mum got on and she encouraged me so did Pat and Mary and I took a deep breath and I made up the 3 steps! I had never been up any stairs before so this was a big deal for me. Mum was so pleased so was I I laid down with Blaze and Shadow and was happy being there, Mum had even bought me a new bed to use at the shows.
I could see the RGT team working really hard throughout the day and I only got off the trailer during the day for a toilet break. Ted and Kia came along to do some PR too. It was a very long day and as soon as we got home Mum started baking again, I had my dinner and them it was time for bed ready for the day after.
So, Monday morning came and up we got packed what we needed and off to Harrow Lodge for day too. Soon as we got there I got straight onto the trailer. It was really hot with the sun shining so Pat let me borrow a Cool Coat to wear which was great and kept me nice and chilled throughout the day. I got to see my friends Twig and Olly. Blaze and Shadow were off at Burnham on Crouch at another event for Greyhoundhomer.
Later in the day I had two visitors come and see me, Margaret and Barbara. They both looked after me whilst I was in the kennels during my racing days. They were so happy to see me and even bought me some treats. It was really nice to see them and Mum has arranged for me to go and see them again. The show was much busier than it was the day before but I laid in the trailer and watched what was going on with people coming up to stroke me when they wanted. Mum sold out of her dog biscuits on both days (she’s getting quite good at making them now, she’s been looking at different ones to make now). I will be sure to tell her if they don’t taste right.
The Havering Show was a success and we made over £800 for Greyhoundhomer.
Throughout the month I have also been down to the kennels at Dunton helping Mum to walk the other Greyhounds looking for a home and helping her potentially choose a friend for me. I like them all so whichever Mum and Dad pick I will be happy.
Okay, time for a sleep all this typing wears me out, hope you have enjoyed my August Adventure update. Plus I need to save all my energy for the Orsett Show and Henfest this weekend. Now I am not so nervous I love going to all the shows and helping to promote the work of Greyhoundhomer and tell people what great pets us retired greyhounds make See you soon!
