I'm not sure but I think Pepper has dandruff! She has little white flakes on her coat that resemble dandruff. Is it possible for Grey's to get this? I'm thinking it's the change in environment, central heating, etc. I've been adding oil to her meals but can anyone recommend a good oil or lotion to rub on her coat? I think the RGT DVD recommends coconut oil or something like that? Anyone had this problem before and found a good solution/product? Thanks

It's quite normal due to the change in environment etc. I often rub a small amount of aloe vera lotion into Ted's coat as well as putting oil in his food in the form of sardines in oil.

I have aloe Vera for her foot pads but I didn't realise I could use it on her coat too.

I use an oil called "Coatex", which I add to their food - it's brilliant for bringing a shine up in their coats and improving their skin - it's expensive but it's worth shopping around on the net.

Cod liver oil tablets can help with coats as well. Sean is sometimes a bit dandruffy, but we've given him a Cod Liver oil tablet more or less everyday since we've had him and he's alot better now.

Hi,
It's probably a change in environment. Oils will definitely help.
Olly gets bad dandruff on his groin and under his armpits, we now use a shampoo called malaseb which you can get from vets or online if you google it. It's quite pricey but I've had a bottle over 6 months now as you only need a teeny bit.
Is she itching lots too?

She is itching a little. At first I thought it was fleas which worried me but I realised it was probably the dry skin hence dandruff.

Its quite common with greys- Bren had it (showed up more, as he's black) but it did go with regular brushing and cod liver oil, but did take a little while.

So do I just buy the normal cod liver oil pills you can get from Holland and Barrett for example?

So do I just buy the normal cod liver oil pills you can get from Holland and Barrett for example? They're probably fine Stephanie, I've not seen them, we get ours from Asda, I've no idea whether there's a recommended strength but we give quite a large tablet that has a soft outer, i.e. it's easy to eat, we just drop one a day in with Seans main meal. If you try this and she chooses to 'eat round' the tablet, then try popping it in something like that wafer thin ham or chicken - that works with Sean and he's the original past master at spitting out tablets\medication. Just be aware that you'll need to keep a check on output to see if ham or chicken upsets her at all, hopefully you won't need to go to these lengths though and the tablet will be eaten with food. Seans dandruff isn't perfect, but it's very close, we only get a bit of build up if he isn't groomed for a while, for example I've only just groomed him this week after the problem with the discs in his neck, and I must have taken another two Seans off with grooming, but he looks great now for a pensioner Greyhound.

You can also get cod liver oil in liquid form that you can pop on her food if she refuses the tablets. I got some from PAH.
It will definitely clear up, just takes a bit of time acclimatising to home life.

You could try Healthspan VetVits Glossy coat & skin Conditioner capsules, they contain omega3 & 6 fishoils, evening primrose and vitamin E. You can order them online from Healthspan or over the phone.
