Have just got our greyhound and been looking at options for insurance and vets. We went with John Lewis as this seemed good cover. Which vets do people use? Been looking at Alphavets as they specialise. Would appreciate advice and also ones that are happy to claim direct from insurance company, so you dont have to pay out in first place. Regards

I use Tesco's for insurance and have a £3000 limit on each condition. Currently undergoing a direct claim with them via my vets, Cherrydown, who are very reasonable for prices of day to day treatments. They have three practices with the main one in Basildon and two others in Wickford and Stanford-le-Hope. I am very satisfied with Cherrydown but you may want to explore other options at the same time.

I don't know where you are based Ollyfam, but we use Bill Steele, currently at Clarks Farm Vetinerary practice near Maldon. Bill is a greyhound specialist and exceptional.

teddyedward and patricks parents
Thanks for your replies.
I am in Romford area.
Alphavets is next door to the Ockendon RGT.
There are quite a few in the Havering and nearby area.

You could also look at Wylies, we used to go there when we lived at Langdon Hills, they've got very good facilities. www.wylievets.comNo idea how they sit cost wise with other vets, but if it's not changed they did have quite long general opening hours, so you are not that likely to hit the 'emergency' time and have to pay double rates. We had to take one of our cats their Xmas day once after he'd been scrapping and was bitten...that was a pricey visit for a long acting anti-biotic injection!

If you decide on an insurer you could take a look and see if they're listed on www.easyfundraising.org.uk if they are please sign up for an account there, and make Greyhoundhomer RGT your supported charity and if you buy the insurance via the Easyfundraising website you'll hopefully trigger a donation to us from your chosen insurer. The bonus is it costs you nothing and you still get the product / service you want!

Hi Ollyfam, I'm in havering too and use Alphavets for Olly, thankfully only had one trip so far, they seemed really professional and I felt comfortable they knew their subject, so to speak. My rabbits and guinea pigs are at Wylies as they have a "small furries" specialist there, it is known to be very expensive, but the best in the area. As already mentioned, the opening hours are great of you work and they can always seem to fit you in at short notice. My girl bunny recently spent a week as an inpatient with gut stasis, £600 later, but thankfully insured and had a well bunny at the end of it!!
Hope that has helped

If it helps, I've just taken Cass to Alphavets. For £53 they pared 2 corns and cut her nails, 1 injection (not sure if it was antibiotic or pain killer) and 2 boots. £9 of the bill was VAT. I use Wylies as well but they aren't cheap, but do have very good facilities and equipment. I'm not sure who provides out of hours care, it used to be Wylies and it's something I must ask. I saw a programme on the TV about some of these companies that "specialise" in out of hours care for vets and the prices were extortionate, so that might be a question worth asking.
