Lou has developed a really nasty inflammation in her throat as a result of radiation therapy - she has a really sore throat, is having difficulty swallowing and is producing amazing amounts of thick frothy drool (which she can't swallow because of her sore throat).
We are very worried but are working with the vet to get her over it, because the radio/chemotherapy combination gives her the best chance of surviving her cancer for a meaningful amount of time. She is being treated with painkillers, steroids and antibiotics.
We've also been doing some research into treating sore throats in dogs, and, in conjunction with the vet, the following seem to be helping:
Honey linctus - home made - equal parts of honey and syrup BP
Cool tea - effective when used a mouth rinse (we squirt it gently into her mouth using a syringe) - she seemed to really like this
Liver ice cream (home made) - this is a big hit!
So, the recipe for liver ice cream:
400g chicken liver, boiled then blended until smooth. Add 150 double cream and whip the mixture until it starts to thicken Chill the mixture When cold, transfer the mixture to an ice-cream maker and churn until frozen (took about 10 minutes in my machine)
If you don't have an ice-cream maker then you can put the mixture into the freezer and stir it every hour or so (to break up any crystals) until it is frozen.

Oh no, poor Lou, the only saving grace is that she gets to have lots of mummies homemade liver ice cream! If olly only knew there was such a thing I'm sure he would feign illness!!
How's her treatment going??

Lou's treatment was going brilliantly up until Wednesday evening when she suddenly started to have problems swallowing - all downhill since then - she's had this side-effect from the radiation and she's so unwell that we've had to delay her chemo as well - not good :-(

Sorry to hear that, it really is a vicious circle and really hard to know what to do for the best sometimes. Could they just try the chemo without radiation initially? I'm only going on what I know of personal cancer experience and wondered if it was the same with animals.
I truly hope things get better with the treatment. I really feel for you.

Thinking of you all and Lou, it's good that she's eating, even though her throat is sore, poor love.

Sorry things aren't going well for poor Lou. Don't know if you could pour some natural yogurt into those ice cube bags and give her a couple of those, I've frozen yogurt and eaten it.
