Hello all,
Does anyone give their pooches pre/probiotics as part of their diet?
I've seen on other forums people feed activia type yoghurts, but I was wondering whether it's ok to give a grey supplement form, which you can get from health food shops?
Olly's poop is always loose, which is affecting his anal glands (as poor pat's other half well knows!) so I'm trying out some new natural things.....
He's on a mixture of raw diet and complete biscuit.
Thanks

i give prince a natural yogurt every day for lunch, he loves it. I use to give him wildlife yogurts but was told there is to many colours in it and wasn`t good for them.

Have you tried a hypoallergenic diet? Mine were very loose but I found that a wheat free diet really helped. I feed Skinners field and trial duck and rice. I get it for a very reasonable £20 for 15kg from Vetuk.

I give my 2 probiotic natural yoghurt now & again & they love it.
Olly may possibly be reacting to a raw diet. I'm no expert but I do remember other Sue (whos sister in law is a vet) saying that raw is not a good idea as raw meat could contain parasites (on another thread somewhere) Good luck!

We tried Sean on various yoghurts for breakfast for a period of time but found that all gave him runny bums, he used to enjoy them though, also he gets runny bums on things like Chicken and Turkey, which is a shame for him because they're his most favourite things! We've been through numerous dry foods, and ended up at Harringtons which isn't an expensive one and is available at supermarkets. We mix in some human grade cooked mince beef and a couple of human grade cooked sausages. We feed him once a day now, having given up on Breakfast because he just started not eating it every time he was given it. This combination though we found make his output pretty reasonable and easy to clear up. However that said we're just going through one of his brief periods of runny bums and 'gandis revenge' so he's fasting for 24 hours, and has been wormed since he was due. So he should be back on track tomorrow.

Cass has a heaped desertspoon of natural greek yogurt on 4 ozs of her complete food every morning, I just add a few handfulls of water and mix it all in. I bought the pre and probiotics that you can add, to be honest I didn't notice the difference and they weren't cheap. I think some dogs are just like that, just like us humans. I have noticed that things like gravy bones, bonios and other treats don't help, so Cass only has tripe sticks and pigs ear strips as treats, I do give her the odd Tesco dental chew but notice the difference then (more difficult to pick).

Thanks very much for the advice, it really is greatly appreciated. Perhaps I'll try the food first before the probiotics. He does have a mixture of nature diet and think its prize choice raw frozen mince, which he adores. He's going through a very weird phase with eating times at moment, and like Sean has stopped eating brekkie, so I've stopped putting it down. Thankfully he takes more interest in his evening meal now.
He does have a daily denta stick and random treats, so think this could be a long elimination process (with me trying my hardest not to spoil the little fella!)
I've made a note of your recommendations and will let you know how I get on with my doggie food diary (without the less attractive consistency berometer!)
Thanks again

Does Olly like raw carrot, Cass doesn't but all my other dogs did. An old lady told me many years ago to give them to my dogs as they are good for cleaning dogs teeth and my other dogs all had beautiful teeth, even the vet remarked on them. Might stop the need for dental chews if he'll eat them.

Our rescue JRT had problems with his anal glands even infection. Vet told us to put bran in his food as it firmed the poos up, it worked for him. I've tried it on Cass but it didn't firm her poos up.

Brennan's teeth are not as good as I would like and I seem to spend a fortune on toothpaste, Plaque off and the gel Pat sells plus a dentastix every day for both!

Thanks Yvonne. Olly doesn't like carrot unfortunately, he will pick it out his food and create a little hate pile! He's got quite good teeth thankfully, but just give them to him in a hope they'll remain that way. I'm going to try a bit of bran next week and will keep you posted! Thanks for the advice!

Think you can get the bran at the farm shop opposite Pike lane (between Upm Crem and the kennels). You need to put about a handful in, just so you can see it when it comes out the other end, as I said it didn't work for Cass but you might be lucky. Other than that best poo bags you can buy are from Belhus woods shop, £12. 50 for 1000, not cheap but at least your not frightened to bite your nails lol

Anybody tried the raw carrots for their dogs, I suppose it's a bit early to ask if they are making a difference to their teeth.
