Hi all, over the last few months I've been giving Fizz Johnson's garlic tabs, which she's been fine on. I've bought some pure garlic granules from the Greyhound shop but it says on the tub for the racing Greyhound. Is it still okay to give to her? It probably is but thought I'd better check first. Thank you.

The granules are strong, so will give her a very small amount a few times a week. Thanks.

Lee if you're using the granules as a flea/worm deterrent, you can also add some boiling water to some granules and when the liquid's cold, rub it into the coat.

Hi all, after some flea issues a few weeks ago, I've started giving Fizz Johnson's garlic tablets again, with good results. I came across some garlic capsules in Morrisons, would it be ok to try her on those? How often? Thank you.

I've just looked at Cassies garlic capsules and it says on there 2 mg of garlic oil. I bought them from the chemists, called Valupak. But I've just noticed that it also says Odourless garlic, so don't know if fleas can smell or not ! I only give them a couple of times a week. Perhaps it might be worth looking on Denes or Dorwest Herbs website to check on what their products contain. Cass got fleas once and it was a nightmare with all the cleaning and washing, one thing I picked up was to sprinkle salt round the edges of carpet etc. as it supposedly dries out any eggs that have been laid. I also put dried lavender in and under her beds (1 dog 3 beds ridiculous) as a deterent. I always thought adult fleas died outside in the winter, but they don't, they lurk under flower pots and lumps of wood in the garden, sneaky little devils.

I know that onions are poisonous for dogs, is not garlic, also?

The garlic and onion thing is quite confusing - I understand that it's raw garlic and onions that are the main problem but cooking them destroys the component that's toxic to dogs.
Because of that I don't worry about the onions in leftovers (provided they're well cooked and there's not too many) and I will include garlic in liver cake as a dog trainer told me it makes the treat more appealing as a training aid. I've asked the vet and he seems quite relaxed about cooked onions in leftovers (though I don't give them to my dogs routinely).
I'm not sure about the garlic supplements - some of these can be more concentrated. My answer would always be to check with the vet to see what's safe/appropriate.

Thanks Yvonne, didn't know fleas don't like dry lavender, will give that a go.
I know the thing with onions and garlic is confusing, but as far as I know galic is ok in very small amounts.
