I thought I'd also start a separate thread..... Sue has posted about a CD which accustoms dogs to the noise of fireworks (see thread in Ty's progress)
If anyone has other tips for nervous dogs at this time of year, please do share them- gratefully received. Bren is getting a bit more confident re noises and does take a lead from us, I have heeded the good advice given in my previous thread re nervousness in greyhounds, but fireworks are a different league altogether!
A health food shop also selling stuff for animals has recommended Skullcap & Valerian, but I've not started it yet, despite being "healthy" I only want to give it for as little time as possible. Have rescue remedy which has been quite useful, on occasion. I know vets can give sedatives, but that's an absolute last resort and would be ok(ish) if fireworks were only for 1 night, but they seem to go on for ever these days!

valerian or lemon balm are good (natural) alternatives to sedatives Sue, but i can understand you desire not to give them all the time all the same. Certainly ignoring the noises will help, as will desensitization but that can take some time unfortunately. do hope that Bren comes round for you

According to the leaflets which comes with the Clix CD, Roger Mugford (renowned dog behaviourist) has been pioneering the use of foam ear protectors for sound-sensitive dogs, though I couldn't find them on his website - www.companyofanimals.co.uk/I have the CD going now at a level where I can hear it (though not very loud) - all the hounds, including Ty, are fast asleep! That is the one downside of the CD - now I have to listen to firework noises as well - I'd rather radio 4!

Lee I buy mine from my local health food shop, never seen it in a pet shop (but you never know!) and i would expect any decent chemist to sell it - look near the sleeping aids they tend to put it near them (usually) hope it helps
