We've just come back from a couple of days at the Ship at Dunwich, Suffolk. It's not just a case of 'ok, we don't mind dogs' - they really go out of their way to make you and your hounds feel welcome. They even got a sausage each for breakfast, plus any of our leftovers 'cos the breakfasts are very generous. Dogs are welcome in most of the public spaces in the hotel, the bar, the conservatory, patio, beer garden and small dining room, only the large dining room is off limits. They'll store your dog's food in a separate fridge in the kitchen as well. We started off in a 'best' room which was a good size for us and 2 hounds, including a large beanbag for the dogs. Unfortunately, Darcy started refusing the stairs so we ended up downgrading to a 'good' room on the ground floor. The 'good' rooms are the cheapest and are fine for 1 hound, a little tight on space for 2 but we managed. They do have larger rooms on the ground floor but these were all booked up.
There's not a lot in Dunwich itself (most of it fell into the sea in the 13th century) but the shingle beach is open to dogs and there are loads of nice walks in the area. Dunwich heath is run by the National Trust and allows dogs. They also allow dogs in their tea rooms.
We'll probably be going back for an Autumn break, we were very impressed and the dogs seemed to enjoy it as well, once they'd got the room they wanted!

Looks like a nice place to have a break, with bracing seaside walks. Hope you had a restful break, Sally.
What a shame Darcy refused to do the stairs, he's a bit big & heavy to carry him!!

Sue, Darcy did the stairs a couple of times. Then we took him out for a last wee at around 10.30 and he point blank refused to climb the stairs afterwards. Ian ended up carrying him up, with Darcy giving the greyhound scream of death the whole way! Good job it was a dog-friendly place. I made a lot of apologies over breakfast the next morning but everyone said they'd heard nothing!

That made me laugh, Sally, good job other residents didn't call the RSPCA!! When they do the scream of death, non greyhound people probably think it cannot be anything other than terrible pain, or cruelty!!

Darcy is a bit of a drama queen. Usually the louder the scream the more trivial the problem! If Roma screams or yelps we take it more seriously, she is very stoic for all that she looks so fragile.
