After losing our girl Attachment DeletedSilky suddenly earlier this year. We thought we'd just go and have a look at rgt dunton. Ended up coming home with our new boy Halo. He's been here one week today and settling in nicely.

That looks like one relaxed happy hound.

He's been here one week today and settling in nicely. Had Halo for 2 weeks now..He's a good boy but will not sleep at night. Every 2 to 3 hours he cries and whines loudly. He doesn't need to use the garden. One of us gets up to reassure him & he settles down then 2 hours starts again. Last night we were up at 1.30. - 3.20 - 4.50 & 6.50. Any advice please.

Hi,
Darcy roo-ed at us for the first few nights we had him. For what it's worth this is what we did:
1. Pretty much what you're doing - reassure him, put him back in his bed, but no smiles, no strokes or cuddles. In other words, you let him know you're there, but you're not going to be much fun at that hour of the morning. I spent hours one night doing this, sitting on the stairs, letting him roo for a bit, then going in and settling him, then leaving again. It is very difficult not to smile when you're confronted by a happy dog, but just keep everything very quiet and neutral. A bit like controlled crying with babies. 2. A radio turned down low. Not on the heavy metal station though! 3. Something with your scent on it - I sacrificed an old T-shirt. 4. You could try one of those plug in sprays that are supposed to calm them. They're a little pricey though.
I'm not quite sure if some or all of these worked, but we didn't have any trouble after the first few nights.
Greyhounds with the rest of their litter for much longer than other dogs. They are then in a kennel, even if they're not sharing with another dog they can hear other dogs all around them. This is the first time he'll have been left on his own and it's bound to be a bit strange for him, but he will settle eventually.

Whilst tidying up today I found a leaflet on anxiety which was given to me when we got Darcy. It might be worth contacting Pat to see if she's got one, or let me have your address in a PM (promise not to stalk you!) and I'll post it to you.

In the kennels there was a radio on low so that might be comforting for him but if not a Kong toy with some chappie just before bed may help him to settle as it will keep him occupied, he did have a kennel mate so may just need a little time to get used to being back to on his own.xx
