Cara has been found. A young couple handed her in to a local vet. I was so happy to see her unharmed. Thank goodness for microchips.

Last evening was my grandaughter, Emma's prom. She and her friend came to have their photos taken in next door's garden. I crated Oliver and the two chihuahuas, leaving Cara with the run of the house and as I went I shut the side door, plus the gates on the drive and went to join the others. Photo shoot over, the girls went to the prom and family and friends disappeared. At that point I noticed the gate was open and, horror of horrors so was the side door, but the kitchen door which had previously been open was shut and at that point my worst fears were realised.
I immediately jumped in the car and went looking for her, At one stage there were 5 people doing the same. I was driving down the A6 when my phone rang, it was a local Vet telling me she had been brought in. At the surgery I met with the young couple who had brought her in. Ironically, she was found only 200 yards from home and they live in the close that backs on to my garden.
It was the most dreadful feeling, I felt numb. My main worry was that she had been hit by a car, taken by the gypsies, or that she had reached the open countryside and I would never see her again.
The name tag on her everyday collar gives the house number and post code which in hindsight is inadequate, even though phone no. was on the back. A new tag is on order with address + post code. Last night that would have indicated she lived just round the corner.
What I have learned from this experience is that other people do not necessarily share your vigilence with regard to the safety of your pets and you can't take anything for granted.

Oh Pat, my heart was in my mouth when I opened this thread, so glad you got her back.
Darcy has got out a couple of times, but we've never lost sight of him. Even so, it's terrifying. I know what you mean about other people though. We've just had the builders in and despite me stressing the importance of keeping the exits closed I was still running around shutting doors and gates all the time. Not sure what part of 'please don't leave the front door or gate open unless you're faster than a greyhound' they didn't understand!

Oh Pat, so glad Cara is home again.
Thank goodness the couple took her to the vet. But a real heart stopping moment for you- phew! Sending you both a hug!
