Hello Everyone, Has anyone any advice they could give me to cure some fur loss on our recently rehomed Greyhound Daz from Dunton. He has a few patches of fur missing on his thighs. I've heard fish oil in the diet can help. I've been giving him Sardines in Olive oil occasionally as well as quality dry food - Symply - with protein level at 20%. But to date he is showing not much improvement. Its early days I know - we only rehomed him in mid Jan but just wondered if anyone had a magic cure. Thanks so much.

My Lily had bald thighs when she came home, I gave her cod liver oil ( one tablespoon ) in every meal for several months and brushed her every day with a cats brush, she now has a beautiful coat soft and shiny. All the best.

I use Aloe Vera gel on Cara and her smooth, bare thighs are now defintely more hairy. My various dogs all have Cod Liver Oil Tablets. They only have to hear the bottle rattle and they are there, not always patiently waiting for their daily dose.
Holland and Barrett have a promotion on just now - everything is buy one get second one half price.

Hi Pat - I'd like to give the Tesco Aloe Vera gel a go with Codie - a recent rehomer - as he's got some fairly dramatic bald patches, the dear lad. The front of his neck/throat is totally bald, both back leg thighs and also he's got bald patches on his front leg thighs. I'm giving him bits of oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines - all no salt and sugar, of course) in olive or sunflower oil. This seems to slowly be improving his dry skin - but he needs a bit more help with his balding. :-) Can you please let us know which one you buy as there seem to be a few different ones which Tesco routinely stock. Many thanks - Codie's mum

I've moved on since my post in 2015. Cara's baldness on her hindlegs and along the lower part of the stomach were looking so bad I was starting to think that maybe she had Cushings Disease. Then I remembered from my youth, Bob Martins Vetzyme tablets. Since she has been taking these her coat has improved beyond recognition and her hind legs look pretty healthy - they are worth a try.
Her daily intake of meds is one codliver oil tablet plus 1-12 Vetzyme tablets taken daily.

Hi Pat - there seem to be quite a few Bob Martin Vetzyme tablets on the market and want to be sure to get the right sort for my boy. Can you please let me know which ones he has and the dosage? You're post says 1-12 tablets taken daily - but 12 seems a lot - maybe that should read "a half"? Thanks for all the help. I'm keen for Codie to get his coat back as he's such a cutie, colouring wise. Codie's Mum

The pot I use has a green lid. On the front it says Conditioning Tablets - trusted nutrition - For Health & Vitality - Ideal as a healthy treat. Ours is Savoury flavour.
On the back it says:
These original Vetzyme conditioning tablets provide a natural source of 8-complex vitamins that help to guard against nervousness, poor coat and skin trouble and help maintain good health and vitality.
Feed every date as 8-complex vitamins are water soluble, they cannot be stored in the body to any great rextent.
I checked the dosage. Dogs 16-30 kgs is 8-12 tablets daily. I think they are healthy treats rather than medicinal.
Hope this helps

Madame Willow is getting a very bald bum, and thinning patches on her front legs and tail (the fur on her back is still nice and thick). We've not had this with our other 2, so I am following the above advice, having recently bought Vetzyme tablets, cod liver oil and aloe vera gel. I also read on Greyhound data ( I think it was) that 2 B vitamins help, both of which can be found in oats, so we'll try them as well. Codies Mum, because Willow is a very "licky" dog, I decided not to buy the only aloe vera gel in a local tesco, as it was an after sun product and seemed to have a lot of added chemicals, so I got the gel from Holland & Barratt, but noted that Boots also sold a 99% one.

Many thanks Patshep and Sueb for the info. My boy went to the vets yesterday just for a regular check up and to make sure he's putting weight on - which he is (what a good boy!!). His ears and nice and clean, his claws are being kept under control by all the walking and we braved it and trimmed a tiny bit off his dew claws. His teeth are looking good - am giving him a few chunky pieces of something called DT - big pieces of biscuit which he has to bite down on to break in two. His pads are looking good - no apparent calluses. All good news. He's only got another 1 or 2Kgs to put on in weight and then he is up to where he should be. The vet commented on the fact that he's also put a goodly amount of muscle on - which is attributed to all the walking we are doing. Have found out that what has been giving him the runs is anything porcine. Pigs ears, pigs trotters etc. so I am afraid those particular treats are off the menu from now on - but replaced by other, more foodie treats. Only thing that remains to improve is his fur. Mentioned I had bought the Aloe Pura gel (99% gel) and she cautioned me against using it on him - as he's a bit keen on licking and it can be poisonous. I am sure that in small quantities he'd be fine but she did say not to use it on his skin. I also asked about the Bob Martin's Vetzym tabs and she didn't think it necessary but can't hurt providing I don't overdose him on Vit b as that can give them mental problems - as it also does in humans. Am going to start adding a small amount of cooked rolled oats to his feed once a day to a) try and firm up his poo a wee bit but also it is meant to be excellent for their joints (something to do with the fluid in the joints) and his hair and skin - as indeed it is also v. good for hair and skin of humans. Bought some Quakers and will give it a shot - making up with water only, as he can't do lactose, and mix in the cool porridge with his regular food. Wish me luck! Will let you know how he gets on with his bald patches. Codie's Mum

Just to give a quick update, I've purchased a big tub of the Bob Martin Vetzyme Conditioning tablets which he loves and eats as small treats when training. Am giving 6-8 a day and see how that goes. As yet, no difference in thickness of quality of the boy's coat, but guess this might take a long old while. Did also get some of the Aloe Pura gel, as mentioned before, but the vet cautioned against it when I mentioned that I would probably use some on his bald patches. She says it is toxic to dogs. I think he'd have to probably eat his own body weight in it to do any harm, but she advised me not to use it. Will keep you posted! Looking forward to seeing a furry bum in a few months time!
