Before Christmas Lily had a nasty anal abscess which Pat kindly advised me as to what she thought it was ,so I took her to the vet and after anti flamitory and strong antibiotics, it has cleared up completely. What I want to find out is ( the vet said she ought to have her anal glands cleared out every two months) does anyone else have to have this done to their hounds?? Lily really cried when the vet put her finger in her bottom !! Fred

Sorry to hear about Lily, but glad she's better now. We haven't had to have this done with any of our dogs, but my dog as a child did have to have this done and didn't seem to mind too much. As I recall it was over very quickly.

One of step-hounds, Big Sid, is martyr to his glands and has recurrent infections - he had his glands flushed about 8 weeks ago but at the moment he's got another infection and is on strong antibiotics for a month :-(
It's ever so painful and he has antibiotic/steroid cream for his sore bottom - emptying their glands is not a comfortable procedure for them, but I think it's only really painful when the gland are inflamed/infected.
Sid might be having his anal glands removed altogther this year - his proper mammy and me will keep you posted :-)

Lily, you are a brave girl. I would not like to think what Ben would do if the vet tried that, !

Years ago we had a jack russell that suffered the same problems with his anal glands and there was mention of him having his anal glands removed. The vet said we could try adding bran to his food. The type of bran is the sort that used to be added to chicken food years ago, looked a bit like small brown porridge oats. Said add a spoonfull at a time until you could see it in his poo. What it did was firmed the poo up, so as the dog pooed it emptied the glands. We had no more problems with anal glands.

A lady over our park was having same problems with her little dog resulting in frequent vet visits. Since begining of December she has been using bran and when I saw her yesterday she said it seems to have cured the problem as no sign of it at the moment and she would have probably been on a 2nd visit by now.

Big Sid's mammy says his bottom is comfortable at the moment :-)
Don't remember if I mentioned what the vet said about anal gland removal? Apparently it's not a huge operation as the glands are close to the surface BUT they are close to the anal sphincter muscle so it's important that you have a goid surgeon so that they take the glands out without damaging the muscle.
Interesting!
