Cara was limping when she came in from the garden last night. No improvement this morning so I took her over to Bedford to see the vet. He confirmed that she has broken an outer toe on her rear left paw and later he showed me her X ray. She is splinted up and sporting a snazzy purple bandage. Got to take her back on Tuesday for a check-up. They staff said she was a model patient. She was conscious when they X rayed her foot and bandaged her up and just took it all in her stride. When I saw the bill, I thought Thank God for Pet Plan!!

Poor Cara - greyhounds and their toes are legend!
Hope she has a quick and uncomplicated recovery. You have my sympathy - keeping a bandage dry is no joke in this weather!

Ahh her dear little face, how long will a toe take to mend?? I do hope that she will be better soon. I was also very glad to have Pet Plan when my dear Indi passed. Fred. Lily sends big licks!

She looks as if butter wouldn't melt in her mouth, but don't you believe it, she's full of mischief.
Changed Vets, after problems with Lily I lost confidence in them. This one has until recently been a greyhound owner and I feel she is in good hands. I've got to take her back Tuesday to have the splint checked. It will be on for six weeks. if it doesn't heal she will have to have the toe removed. She's been very good and has not tried to get the bandage off. They gave me a couple of cut down 'Drip Bags with strips of bandage threaded though which she wears when she goes out in the garden, topped with a pedal bin bag - keeping her dry so far.
Fred, did you know that like Indi, she is a Black Shaw girl?
Will keep you posted.

When I saw the top photo I did actually think how much she looked like my Indi! Has she got any white on her toes, indi had one tiny white tip on her back paw and a very thin lightning strike on her chest. I do miss her but my Lily is such a loving girl I could never have another breed now. So glad you changed vets Pat. All the best. Fred

I couldn't resist taking this pic. Although Cara and Oliver get on well together, I think this shows they have moved to another level

Sorry Pat, I completely missed this thread until just now (not quite sure how!)
Sorry to hear about Cara, wishing her well, poor little lamb.
Love the pictures, Oliver looks as if he's saying, "the things I have to put up with!!"

Cara is having her strapping changed every Tuesday but last week I also had to take her back on Friday evening. Apparently the splint had snapped at the foot end and was working its way up.
New splint and bandage applied and still had to keep the Tuesday appointment. But then on Sunday morning heard her jump off the bed and yelp and she came in limping. Felt her leg and paw, got no reaction and gradually over the day she was able to put paw to the floor. Before going to the vet on Tuesday she stood on her hind legs, so obviously a lot better.
Tuesday, got checked out, new snazzy lime green christmas bandage applied.
Although its a 60 mile round trip and my fuel bill is horrendous, I am so glad I have got her registered with Acorn House at Brickhill, on the outskirts of Bedford. The staff at all levels at great, a very professional practice.
Pet Plan emailed they had paid my heavy first claim, now I've got cash in hand to pay for the second round until I claim again!!
Cara has been an abolute star, every time she needs to go out she just stands there and lets me put her drip bag on, and take off when she comes back. She's missing her walks, but hopefully it will all be worth it in the end.

Ouch that sounds very painful (to both poor Cara and your bank balance!)
Wishing you both well

Back at the Vet's today for Cara's weekly check up.
While fully conscious she had 2 x-rays taken of her toe. The good news is the bone seems to be mending, not so good is she has friction sores from the bandage. She's on anti-biotics for these and she now needs to have her bandage changed twice a week. As long as she gets better, I'm not going to worry about the extra 120 miles a week - she's worth it.

I can't resist taking pics like this, they are just so at ease with one another. I think I'll make the head shot into a card for next year

Took Cara to the Vet's this morning where she went off for her bandage to be changed. When she came back., gone was the splint and just a dressing on her foot. She has friction sores which are causing her discomfort and are apparently quite nasty. The dressing has obviously to be kept dry. On the way home she started licking it but when I got back I gave her a treat then popped her muzzle on. Hopefully problem is sorted.
She's got to go back again on Saturday.

Pressure sores are such a nuisance - take longer to heal than the original injur sometimes. Hope Cara recovers soon :-)
