We have had Jack since may 2013. Everytime we have gone to get his nails clipped (really not comfortable doing it myself as he has a few white nails!!)he has got worse! He screams, snaps at nurse, dances about like a horse! Even with treats and praise.
The last time he was being so silly his quick got snipped so i am sure thats it now!! We were advised to try filing them, which i am slowly trying to get his confidence letting me hold his toes to try a little file. Anyone else had this problem? Are there any recommended files? Im just using an old one of mine at the moment but still not had a good chance to give them a good file yet. Would love to try the moto type but i dont think he will get on with the noise!!

There's a post way back about someone using a rotary type electric nail file with some success - the noise does bother some hounds though. You may need to slowly get him acclimatised to the noise before you touch him with the device. I've used ordinary rough emery boards on mine, which works pretty well especially for taking the sharp end off dew claws, but is time-consuming for taking off any length. Ty and Ollie are very laid back so the advantage of doing their nails at home is that they're lying down and relaxed. If the worse comes to the worse you can always ask the vet for a mild sedative (like diazepam) or you could try the old favourite - rescue remedy - about half an hour before "operation nails" though I'm not a fan of complementary therapy myself. I thought this was a useful article - andy321.proboards.com/thread/30109 - but I always get the vet/nurse to do it - I have a thing about the "clip" and Ollie has particularly jet black nails.

We tried to do Gucci's nails with a motorised dremel last weekend and he put up with it for about three nails - which is pretty impressive for him! Even after that he didn't scream like he does when we use clippers; he just pulled his paw away. We're going to try a few more nails this weekend. I guess it's going to be a bit like painting the Forth Bridge - no sooner will we have got round all his nails than we'll have to start again.

The greyhound Vet told me that electric files can cause the claw to get hot and hurt the dog. I use a human battery manicure set on Cass but it's a case of do a little bit at a time.

I use a dremmel on a low speed for Radley, you do have to be careful not to heat the nails up though, if you do lots of little grinds that doesn't happen. It took him an hour or so to get used to the noise and virbration, but it wasn't particularly hard, I just told him to lie down on the couch, held the dremmel and touched his paws with the back of my hand until he got used to it. It's not as fast as clipping but he prefers it, you do inhale a lot of nail while doing it though
