hey everyone, i spoke to a guy yesterday on the harlow walk (which was lovely!) and he has a small bitch that suffered from seperation anxiety very similar to what bertie suffers from and he has recomended a crate? He said to make it a fun place to stay in, by placing treats in there and also an item of my clothing. He only uses it when its time for bed.....which would help me a lot (i could get my bed back!! ) My friends dog sleeps in a crate to and she isnt distressed at all as she sees it as her area in which she can be on her own and gets treats. Would anyone recomend this to or would say try it? any opinion or help would be lovely :-)

Hiya, I suppose anything is worth a try if its getting really bad. I personally had a rubbish experience with crate training, but that was with a chihuahua. It didn't work at all and he just covered the crate in poo (as well as himself) and get in a right state regardless of treats. The crate was flippin' expensive too. I can imagine a crate that would home a greyhound would be beyond expensive Like I said, the only thing we found to cure his separation anxiety was a female companion ;D Hopefully somebody else will have some other advice.

Dads Love ebay for the bargains. If you think it might be woth it, then I'd go for it. He may well see it as his safe place, a little den if you like and love it. If there is one thing i've learnt in the last couple of weeks its that houndies are like no other dogs ;D ;D ;D

Cassie it would be cheaper to put a bed for Bertie in your room and stop him from getting on your bed, would you honestly shut the crate door on him? Saying "No" isn't being unkind to him, it may even go some way to make him less dependant on your company and help with the crying issues when you aren't there. Whatever will he do if you have to go in hospital, go on toughen him up a bit Yvonne

Bertiesmum, I'm currently reading 'retired greyhounds for dummies'. As it's been a while since I've had a youngster I thought it would be worth refreshing myself on a few things. I'm finding it quite useful.
Anyway, it has a section on crating which might be of use to you. It's too long to type here, sorry. There's also a more detailed explaination of dealing with separation anxiety.
I got it second hand from amazon and cost about a fiver.

i just want him to feel safe and comfortable when im out....not that i am much at the moment anyway! (gotta work on dissertation :-( ) where would i put it? in my room or in the lounge? as it says on crating websites to put the crate in a family room so they are still with the pack but bertie is fine then and only whines when its bedtime, so would placement in my room be best bet? thanks!
