So most people will agree that one of the first things people try and teach their dog is to sit. I know that the position can be quite tricky for greyhounds but they can do it!
In the 3 weeks I've had Pepper she's only sat about 3-4 times and doesn't stay in the position long. When she does it I say sit as quickly as I can and praise her but she just doesn't do it much spontaneously. In fact it's as if the only positions she knows are standing up or lying down asleep. ;D
I've tried the technique recommended in pretty much every dog training guide which is to hold the treat above their head and move it backwards so that they sit but it just isn't working. She bends her head back or starts shuffling or just gives up!
Even if I try to make it obvious what I want from her by using my other hand to gently press down on the rear end, she just doesn't get it.
Maybe I'm doing it wrong but I swear I'm following all the explanations correctly and I was able to teach all my other dogs how to sit!?
Is there a special greyhound technique? I can't seem to find the "thing". All I've managed to train so far is "come", "watch" and "touch" but even those are sometimes hit and miss. It also appears that when no treats are visible it's not so easy.
She is getting quite good at stopping on the pavement though. I've been trying to train her so that every time we approach a crossing she "stop"s and "stay"s until I'm ready to cross at which point I say "come". She's getting better because today I managed to get her to "stop" when she got to the end of the pavement even though I was behind her and the leash was loose.
Perhaps I'm expecting too much too quickly. I think it's just because I can tell how intelligent she is and I'm eager for her to learn new and fun things. I feel like the training is good mental exercise and fun since she isn't at all interested in toys.
When I was at the Discovery Dog show I saw dogs do absolutely amazing things with their owners, it was such a pleasure to watch the communication and fun between them.
