Hi , i took Barney to a training class to socialize him and he was really nervous so they told me to give him a treat every time he barked to take his mind off of it! But to me its rewarding him for barking also they took off his lead witch i thought was a bad idea, and he ran straight after a miniature jack russel and they kept calling his name wish i also thought was rewarding him, am i wrong? or just not use to dogs, just kids?

First thing that sprang to my mind is do they know any thing about greys, seems not if they let it off the lead my Abbey would have come back with J/R in her mouth, she can not be let off lead
not sure about the reward for barking but I would give a treat if my 2 bark.
see how next lesson goes if they do the same ask if they know any thing about Greys
good luck

I think some of these so called dog trainers haven't got a lot of knowledge regarding the oddities of certain breeds, hope they didn't take the lead off before finding out if he was small dog friendly!!! Are there any greyhound dog training classes near where you are, I think Angela takes hers to Billericay greyhound classes Yvonne

Yes I do take mine to Billericay, we have special classes just for greyhounds. I am training to be an instructor there.

Thats exciting Angela ! I'm sure you will do well. Where do they hold the classes, inside? They have an indoor venue and an outdoor secure venue. We are normally inside as the greyhound classes are on a Saturday morning, and they have agility classes going on outside on a Saturday. It is exciting as I love working with animals. I am doing a college course as well as in time I would like to be a qualified intructor with the Kennel Club KCAI (Kennel Club Accredited Instructor) Angela

Sounds a very good set up then, so you have chosen well. I wish you well with that. You have done a good job with your own by the look of it.

I just wanted to add my recommendation for the Billericay dog school and the Saturday greyhound classes - they're very good.
We didn't realise quite how good Billericay dog school was until we went to a local dog-training class (we live in Surrey) - our local class is quite chaotic, with a lot of waiting around. The Billericay classes were a model of efficiency by comparison.
Despite the disorganised class, Blue and Lou are doing very well.....

We need to try and get Vinny back to the laid back boy he was before he was attacked by that *)^(%&*%) westie
We were thinking of going to a training class but reading about the JRT and the lead thing has made me think it might be a bad idea - Vinny wouldn't have any of that - he'd be such a wreck he may well have JRT for lunch if it tried to run at him. I'm glad I've read this - it has saved the bother of stressing him out unnecessarily
I wonder if a class would get funny if our two wore muzzles - I bet they would!
I am gonna have to look for somewhere grey orientated near us
They do 'naughty (socialisation) walks' with some of the dogs from the kennel in Fleet where I walk the greys. The only thing is I hate the fact they are called 'Naughty' cos Vinny isn't naughty - he's just scared witless!
Angela - hope the studying is going well - you are such a star ;D

Blue and Lou are doing well in our local mixed dog training class - they might even be ready for the Bronze Good Citizen test in April - we'll keep you posted. Test or no test, they're doing well for 7-year olds!
I think that classes are a great idea - it's just a question of finding one that suits you and persevering.
Blue and Lou are rescue dogs number 3 and 4 for us - each dog has been a work in progress from the day we got them 'til the day we sobbed goodbye.
Our first dog, Honey, who I rescued after she had been dumped on a dual carriageway, took a year or more to settle and lose her terror of the car.
Stick with it - personalities are hard to change but I think that behaviours can be worked with.....
