After weeks of deliberation and research I have finally found my new best friend. I've been wanting to adopt a dog for years and finally feel like I am ready and capable of handling the commitment.
Since reading up about retired greyhounds I've been fascinated and love struck. A couple of weeks ago I met the adorable "Hot Stepper" who made me believe in love at first sight ;D I'm very excited and happy to say that things are moving along and it looks like she'll be joining me in my London abode in the next couple of weeks.
I've grown up with dogs but haven't owned one in years and am really excited about this new chapter in my life. Having very little experience with greyhounds I thought it would be a good idea to join the forum and learn from others.
First things first, do most people give their dogs a new name? I read that most greyhounds don't really recognise their own names since these are usually racing names which they rarely hear. What are your views? Keep it (in which case I guess it would be "Stepper") or change it?

I honestly think that it's up to you - dogs can be trained to recognise their name and they are very adaptable. Where our hounds came with a 'kennel' name we've stuck with it - the only exception being "Tyson", which we shortened to Ty because he's too big a scaredy wuss jelly boy to be called Tyson :-) Is that "Hot Stepper" - a blue girl born in April 2010? www.greyhound-data.com/d?i=1806936If so then one of her grandaddy's was our Ty's dad and her other grandaddy was our old boy Blue's dad - but fantastic hounds so there's greatness in her blood! Enjoy your hound - we;ve become totally addicted, which is why we have 3 (Lou, Ty and Ollie), and why my friend has 9! We reckon that as long as we've got fewer than her we're perfectly sane :-D

hi newbff i`ve owned prince 2 yrs. his racing name was dillemas prince so we kept prince as it suited him, but he acts more of a king than a prince lol. i have just started fostering greyhounds and the 2 so far i have had, had girl names so that was ok, but if for example i fostered the greyhound spud for lunch which is at the kennels i would deffinately change that straight away ( you cannot call a girl spud ) she is beautiful and should have a girly name. you have a beautiful girl and if stepper suits her i would stay with it. its what you feel comfortable calling her. lovely to here more about how she settles and the people on here are more than happy to give lots of advise. well done for letting a greyhound choose you to be with in her forever home. Hi sue, Yes it's that hot stepper! Good to know about the greatness in her blood I'm not a huge fan of the name stepper so I was hoping to change it. I have a few thoughts including Skylar which can sound a little like stepper so may that would be an easy transition. Though I really like the names Isis or Storm. Diane, I actually think the name Spud is really cute for a bitch but I guess it goes to show everyone has different tastes I can't wait to share our new adventures with everyone and learn from you all.

Congratulations on adopting a greyhound, she looks beautiful. We've recently adopted a new girl her name was Dingo Kate and they called her Dingo at the kennels where she was. She didn't really seem to know her name so we changed it to Katie which she learned very quickly. Isis is a lovely name :-). Sam

Hello and welcome, I like the quirky names and think Stepper is lovely and so unusual, but then so is Isis a nice name. Cass was called Cassie at the kennels so I didn't change it, it had nothing to do with her racing name, I suppose a name just sounds nicer than a number. I thought she'd had such major changes in her 4 years I'd keep her name. We bonded very quickly after she came home but she has retained the " I'll do it if it suits me " side of her nature, which I think is unusual for a greyhound. If it was love at first sight for you it won't be long before you'll be smitten. ENJOY

I rescued my first dog from a dual carriageway in South Wales - I think she'd been dumped from a car. We had no idea what her name was so me and a neighbour just called out different words until we found on that she responded to - she went bananas when we said "Honey" so that became her name!
If you didn't fancy "Stepper" you could try "Pepper" or "Peppa" - sounds similar...

I like quirky too but stepper just seems a little too masculine. I like Isis as I think she looks regal like an Egyptian goddess. Sue, I can't believe I hadn't even thought of Pepper! That's really cute especially since she's a dark grey colour. And sounds pretty much identical to stepper. I might try the technique of just shouting out a few names and seeing which one she responds to best.

Hi! I was lucky as Ted's racing name was Drakey's Ted so 'Ted' it was! Mind you he also responds to other names I call him, especially when he has the top half of his body down the kitchen waste bin!! Whatever name you choose you will have the happiest of times with your new friend. Well done! Dave

Hi and welcome to the forum. Congratulations on adopting Stepper, she looks lovely. I think names really depend on if they know their kennel name and if they respond to it as some do but if you don't like the name then change it. Our girl's name was Off Course and she was known as Course but she didn't respond to it. She became Betty from day one and repsonds to it......only not when off lead . Enjoy your new addition and look forward to seeing pictures of her. Nicky

Congratulations on Stepper as for names well that's entirely up to you sometimes you get them home and they just cry out to be a certain name that suits them. My first boy who we lost last year was called Bart as his racing name was Eat my shorts so after walking him for two years whilst he was still racing I was used to calling him Bart, Mersey we took home 4 1/2 years ago now her racing name was Mersey Lady and same thing I new her whilst she raced so stayed with Mersey, after losing Bart, Mersey was very distant so we took home Burnpark Scholes so yes we changed that he is tall and very elegant (although slightly mad) so we named him Beau. Anyway as you can see it depends on the dog, welcome to the forum and look forward to hearing what name you give and how things are going, you will have lots of fun and love from them. Chris

Congratulations on your new hound.
When we knew we were getting our first hound we drew up a list of names, then when we chose him his kennel name was Darcy, which we liked, so we kept it. We like to think he was named after Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice, but since we got to know him we think it's more likely he was called after Darcy Bussell, the ballerina, as he prances round a lot and is a big diva!
Then we adopted Night Roamer, kennel name Roamer. I considered Gypsy (traditional name for black dogs, also fitted with Roamer) but that has negative and possibly even racist connotations these days. I also liked Pickle, as in the old-fashioned expression 'in a pickle' but my daughters didn't really get that, so she ended up as Roma.
I think it's as much in your tone as in their name, if I call one of mine both come to me.

Welcome and congrats on the new member of your family. We got Thanks Patsy nearly 3 years ago. He didn't look too much of a Patsy (although that was his owners name) and we wanted something Irish as that is where he was from so we named him Patrick. He doesn't often get called it though, it's usually poppet, darling, sweetheart, big bum, hungry guts and other such endearments. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what they are called it's what they respond to - "Food" or "Dinner" are good names! lol

Been down there today and stepper is beautiful and has such a gentle playful character! Very pleased she has found a home because the temptation was nearly all too much!
Good luck!
P.S you can call them whatever you want once they are home. Ours was corby boy and then flash in the kennels now he responds to Olly!

I guess that's why they often tell you not to use your dog's name when disciplining it. Corby, you saw my baby today? How was she? I can't wait to take her home but I'm going into hospital for a couple of days so it has to wait...
