We've had our new girl for a month and she's totally wonderful (apart from the counter surfing... : . She's shown vague flashes of interest in toys, but seems more puzzled by them IYSWIM. Of course it's still early days, but are there any ways I can encourage her to play? We've had a few brief zoomies around the house first thing in the morning when she's soooooooo pleased to see us she seems to lose control of her usual cool, calm self (which always seems to catch her by surprise ;D), so I think there's a playful soul in there waiting to come out. I'd love to help her rediscover her inner-puppy (she's 4 and a half now). Any advice? Thanks!

Hello grundmum68, glad its all going well.
I think they've all got a playful side, especially if you're a fun bubbly household, they will pick up on this, however in my experience it will take a little time. Olly was home for about 3 months before he started being playful and is now very puppy like and surprises us every day with something mad he does. He's nearly 6 and was quite boisturous when we got him but didn't know what to do with toys, now he has more than a 2 year old!!!
One things greys seem to love are the new octopus cuddly/squeaky/rustly toys. You can pick them up on eBay or if you're near Romford, jollyses at gallows corner stock them.
But anything that squeaks should start to get her interest and perhaps start playing with her first thing in morning when she does her mad lap of honour !!
Hope that helps?

I agree about the fact that they respond to the household. I live a very quiet lifestyle so Ted is also very quiet most of the time but has his own agenda! He will wake up from a sleep and go straight into 'dynamic play mood' for a few minutes the straight back to sleep!! There is a morning ritual when Ted wakes me up with a cold nose and we have to play 'chase' around the flat!! I believe that play is there somewhere but in some cases it needs to be encouraged by having lots of toys available as well as interaction from us. Play though is a sign of a settled and happy dog!!!

I agree about loads of toys, we have sooooo many where they started to be collected when we had Bart who died last year, when Mersey came home she loved to play with Bart's toys so ended up getting a load more then Beau came home to keep Mersey company after our sad loss he also loves toys. We have a basket by the settee where some toys not played with everyday go, so now and again Beau routes through them to see what he hasn't played with for awhile it's like having the children again at home. He also races round the room in the morning it must be a wow mum and dad are up and it's a new day, what a lovely way to look at life. Chris
