Beau is such a chilled out boy not vicious in anyway well maybe not a cat lover, when he first came home he slept under the stairs his preference, during the night he would growl and snarl and bark in his sleep quiet loudly, we stopped him getting under the stairs and brought the bed further out to the side of the stairs gradually he seemed to just do it now and again. The last few days he has started again I have pulled his bed further out into the hall hoping that solves the problem.
Does anyone else have this problem and if so has anyone got any better ideas. Chris

Hi Chris,
In my experience, all of my dogs, of various breeds and sexes have done this, and I've just found it quite funny to watch. I don't think it's anything to worry about unless it's scaring you really??
If it puts your mind at rest, Olly does it quite often whilst he's sleeping next to me on the bed and I've woken him up from it, all he's done was try to get some saliva back in his mouth (when they do that weird licky, swallowy thing for a minute or so until they realise that big tongue belongs to them!).
I knows there's a lot of psychology books on the market, so may be worth doing a Google to read up on it?

Ted is so funny when he is dreaming! He barks, growls, wags his tail, whimpers etc! I just enjoy watching him!

Sean does mini high pitched barks and can be seen to fidget around sometimes in his sleep, he's always done it since we've had him.

From reading up, it appears dogs (and even birds!) go through REM exactly the same as us, so it's their version of sleep talking or even walking and nothing to worry about Chris. Your pup has obviously just got an extra active imagination when sleeping. Apparently part 2 of sleep after REM is deep sleep where they can be seen to move a lot but the vocal chords are completely paralysed.
The power of the internet, I love it :0)

Chris, it just means they are in a deep and comfy sleep, don't worry.
Patrick dreams too - his legs move, his mouth opens and closes, he snores, grumbles and huffs and puffs and his tail wags at varying speeds completely of its own volition.

Chris, As others have said, it's probably just doggie sleep and dreaming, as long as he's not hurting himself. Both Bren & Nelly do little high pitched barks and twitches in their sleep. Bren sometimes thrashses his tail around quite violently, too!

Hi Chris, We have the same with Fletcher,it's like he is running around the track in his sleep his head, legs and tail go quite violently, we leave him to get on with it at these times as he will bark and make us jump if we touch him even slightly. The off putting things with him is, that he sleeps with his eyes open. It took us a while to get used to this. This is the only time he ever barks, nothing ever sets him off. With Rosy, she tends to kick out, also violently and eventually we get kicked off the couch. Can you imagine how it is when they are both on the couch together and both in dream mode. It's a nightmare for us.

Thank you all for your comments and that a lot of the dogs do it, Bart used to growl and race, but Beau snarls and shows his teeth so much so that Mersey won't sleep near him, although he has had a couple of upsets lately with other breeds so thought it may be that starting him off dreaming. He snarls and barks so loud it sometimes wakes him up, he like others is not vicious when you touch him while he is asleep.
He doesn't scare me I would just like him and Mersey to have a peaceful sleep, Mersey does little barks but they are little noises, not like his. Thanks again it's good to know others go through the same things. Chris
