Every now and then Paddy takes to rubbing his head on his bed, or the lawn, like he's itchy or he's trying to rub something off. First he rubs one side and then the other. He's only just had a check up with the vet, so I'm assuming there's nothing attached like a tick or fleas or anything...so I don't understand why he's doing it...is he just itchy? Or is this just a habit thing?

Baby does this on her bed after eating so i assumed it was her way of cleaning her muzzle off.is it after he's eaten?

Patrick does it on the floor too and like Sarah think he is cleaning his food from his face. Eve x

I have a book on dog body-language (very useful) which says that it's a sign of great contentment (once you've ruled out toothache, eye or ear irritation) :-)
Lynx used to, and now Ollie does, do it after a particularly nice dinner!

Ben does this, he rubs his head on the walls and sofa, not good when he has just had pilchards on toast!

Mersey, Bart and Beau have all done it sometimes it's to put their sent on things and other times to clean their chops after eating, but nothing unusual. Chris

Ted is another 'offender' who will do it after his evening meal. My previous beauty would often use my trousers rather than her bed - bless her!

Sounds like fairly normal behaviour then. I haven't noticed it as being after food in particular - but it is sometimes after waking up, and he's a real drooler, so maybe he is just drying himself?!
Thanks for all the replies!
