Every morning I look through the Dog’s Lost pages to share the joy of those dogs who have been found, and commiserate with those whose poor hound never made it back to their much loved home.
Dogs that have died through one means or another are heart-breaking to read as peoples grief is exposed before your eyes... From owners who will carry the guilt through the rest of their lives because they felt they didn’t do more to protect their pet, and the happiness of others celebrating their pets return unscathed does go to show just how tenuous our grip on life really is.
The biggest killer of dogs, and no doubt other living creatures is the railways failure to adequately fence great sections of the rail network. Dog after dog is killed on the railway because Network Rail would rather pay a dividend to shareholders than make their fencing secure. A travesty really because if a dog, deer or badger can access an unfenced section of railway, so can a child.
This time last year along the railway line that goes through the centre of Harlow Town Park, a Collie dog was killed when her owner lost sight of her for a minute. The owner whose life revolved around her dog was seen for day’s walking through the park calling her pets name and crying, until news came through her dogs body had been found besides the railway line, very close to where she went missing. This was made more poignant than normal because not only did she dote on her poor dog, but she was also deaf so depended on her for so many things the dog alerted her to that she herself couldn’t hear.
The selfish actions of big business who see the £ as their God have so much to answer for in this world of me me and me, so I suppose not much will change.
I write this after another two dogs have been found dead on the railway line. Two Boxer’s, litter sisters Chloe & Sasha who escaped from the owners garden while they were away on holiday. First one was found dead by the railway line, and then the following day they found the other poor girl. A tragedy I think the owners will take to their grave.
So be careful out there with your hounds, keep them safe and away from the dangers the railway brings to every living creature big or small..
