I just thought I would start this thread off out of interest.
When our phone rings and nobody answers it, or takes along time to answer Charlie starts to Howl. It was not until he had done this a few times that it reminded me that when I lived at home we had a Sheltie and she used to do it as well. The girls never did this before Charlie but just recently when Charlie starts to howl they join in as well. I wonder if Charlie is calling someone to answer the phone? Or if he thinks it is his way of answering the noise of the phone?
Does anyone elses dog do this?
Angela

Charlie is such a character would love to see him in action, nothing tends to set Frank off apart from Thunder and Fireworks.

bertie doesnt howl at the phone; just stares at it with his ears up (looks like he is twitching as his head moves funny) he only howls if he is left in a room on his own with the door shut :-)

Hi Angela,
Fizz doesn't take any notice when the phone ring but when she wants my attention she howls. Don't know if you saw a previous thread of mine.
Of late Fizz has become very vocal. When I go out she just goes and lays on her bed, but when I come home and put my key in the door she will start to howl and then carry on talking to me. She must be talking because I am answering her back!!! .
Don't know about you, but I see it as empathy between hound and mum/dad!!

Seaney only gets vocal when we arrive home from wherever we've been! Nothing seems to faze him. However I wonder whether the howling issue is caused by the device hitting a certain frequency that says to your dog sing-a-long? We've probably all seen those daft You've Been Framed clips where someone's playing a Piano and a dog is howling along with it. Just a thought. If it is related to this though, how come some dogs do it and other don't?

The only time that Blue and Lou have howled is when I locked them inside and went outside to talk to the builders we had in at the time - I'm almost certain it's because they could hear my voice but couldn't reach me - it was very pitiful!
They don't howl at the phone and my other hobby is singing (in the few moments of the day not devoted to Blue and Lou's comfort). They never sing along though they have been known to fold their paws over the ears......:-)

When i first met Samantha her mum & dad had a grey & a whippet called Tess she used to howl at the phone but never anything else.. thinking about it now maybe it was the pitch of the ringtone. try turning it down Angela see if it makes a diference.

I've known one or two dogs too who over the years have howled, but mainly to musical instruments being played. I wonder too if it is the pitch of the ring tone? Would be interesting to borrow a different phone with a different pitch as an experiment. I've recently bought a different phone, and it's ring-tone irritate the life out of me! ;D

My last Dobie Amber was best friends with a black Greyhound and they used to run quite a distance towards each other so that they could greet each other. They would sniff around together for about 2 mins then my dobie would be off doing her own thing. The Grey would then wait for the humans to meet and then walk along with them. Yvonne

Frank does a half hearted howl come whimper if the door bell keeps being pressed, and certain different door bell chimes. Annie takes no notice. I reckon he is just trying to say "is someone gonna get that or not?" ;D

George howls at the phone - but he only does it if we are upstairs. It comes in handy as we don't always hear it but we definitely hear him! He seems to be saying "come on will someone answer it".

Strangely enough, Kristin has suddenly started in recent times? She will be laying on my partner's bed, then suddenly some early mornings the phone rings with work colleagues etc calling. From my room you can hear the 'Thud'! as she jumps off the bed, and although it is not exactly howling, she will whine something wicked. As if trying to alert that the phone is ringing? And won't stop until the phone either goes onto answermachine or it is picked up ;D
