I am hearing a lot of people have started giving their hounds a raw diet . Has anyone tried this ? With what kind of results ?

I've not heard of anyone on this forum feeding raw meat, could be wrong though. We always cook meat we give to Sean, he has minced beef and sausages. I guess it should be OK as long as the meat is good and not off.

It is through Twitter . There are lots of greys on there. I am nervous of meat full stop as I am veggie. I want Fagin to have what is best for him though. I am giving him either fat free chicken or sardines with his dry food every other day .

I am sure Fagin is very happy on his fat free chicken and sardines. Personally, I wouldn't give Patrick uncooked meat.

My sister-in-law is a vet and she's counselled us against a raw meat diet - she says it's too easy for dogs to pick up intestinal parasites.
We always cook meat for ours, but they don't object to the trimmings off a raw steak now and then (the nice bits come to us!) and I do know of a greyhound owner who gives her hound raw chicken wings as an occasional treat with no harm (haven't tried that on ours - don't fancy it - knowing them they'd bury it under my pillow for me to find later...)

Thanks Sue. My brother in law teaches chef skills etc at uni and he thought it was dangerous. I will stay as I am . Fagin seems healthy and happy. Thanks Mark and Patrics parents.

Good post. I think the parasite question makes this a no no for me. Most people love their dogs so raw feeding could be an unwarrented danger to their well being, especially as there are many feed stuffs on the market that are quite adequet for their needs. Personally I always take the advice of people who are in a far better position than me when it comes to my dogs health, it would be foolish not too.

Annie ,Rosie ,Trisha,Bo ,all Greys ,Buddy ,large x Well after much reading up on BARF diet and advice from several very owners we have started the raw food diet in a gentle way with already strong results. Appetite had improved . More lively . Poo is less runny . I don't think I can go as far as tripe but if anything helps it'd worth trying. The dry skin patches have improved too but of course it could all be a coincidence. So far I am cutting out cheese and alternating raw chickens (frozen for humans ) and sardines with added veg .

I use Natures Menu A.M.P frozen cubes ,which contain everything in various flavours ,as a basis then add chopped tripe chunks (i dont have a very strong sence of smell !!) plus chopped chicken necks ,topped with a ckicken wing each all supplied by Jolleys Pet Foods
if you check A.M.P.s website you can get all the imfo .there are some dedicated people who make their own .I take the easy way ,have it all done for me
I wiil forward a website of ONE such person who has even gone so far as to explore all the advantages of all the ingredients ,I confess to not yet having read the entire contents
very interesting ,I do spice it up with cooked ham ,sardines ,etc ,to make it tasty ,tho not realy nec.

I have heard the raw diet is very good for dogs as its a more natural diet, what they would eat in the wild and have lots of good results with it.I just cant get my head around the thought of giving Baby a meaty bone and her not choking to death on it though, but apparently bones only splinter once they're cooked ???Im trying her on natural instincts working chicken which has bone included but very finely ground up so going to see how she does on this,my friends grey has it and hes doing really well on it.Nikki Brown(dog psychologist) is a great ambassador on Facebook for the raw meaty bones diet, her grey is fed on it and absolutely loves it.im sure she would be glad to answer any questions x

this maybe controversial depending on your views I have 5 dogs (4 of them greys) fed for several YEARS on the B.A,R.F diet supplied by Jollies pet food specialist I called this am ,as I do twice a week ,to find that 1 of the items I wanted ,namely raw tripe chunks was o/o/s till Friday on the next delivery day the demand is growing to such an extent ,becoming more and more popular ,feeding raw !! versus the vet ins, I had all 5 insured at a cost of £100.80 per month I started to think ----how often am I using vets so rightly or wrongly ,I decided to cancel the3 older ones "Annie "13 "Buddy "13 ,"Rosie "12 so for several months now ,only Trisha and Bo are insured still with Tesco still costing £80 odd pounds but the rest goes in a separate bank account ,for as and when . dont know if this is a good or a bad idea ,but so far so good who knows what lies ahead ,I will just have to face it, the perils of multiple dogs ,but who would be without them ?? Bones are difficult to come by round here, but last week I managed to get 3 packs of knuckle and assorted bones.
Each dog had a designated area and enjoyed their treat, even Molly who had teeth out a couple of weeks ago.
I served them raw, but wished I had cooked them when I saw the bloody mess on the mats. A quick wipe over with baby wipes and all clean again.
After reading this thread will cook next batch when they come out of the freezer.
