CLONAD GIRL (Panda) Update
Further to our recent telephone conversation, I just wanted to let you and her previous owner know how Panda is getting on.
Living with a cat
We knew from the first few days that the muzzled Panda was very interested in our cat, Rocky. The cat also swiped her on her nose during the first few days, so she understood that he lives with us and is part of the family too. We looked up online about how to train greyhounds to live with cats.
Luckily Panda is a sweet and very obedient greyhound. She has responded brilliantly to a firm ‘no’ command and retreats to a different room. Each time she responded well we rewarded Panda with a treat. After four weeks, I am comfortable enough to leave Panda unmuzzled in the same room as the cat unattended. She hasn’t chased Rocky the cat for two weeks.
Living in the house
Panda is a very sweet-natured bitch. She loves her bed on the floor and never jumps up on the sofas while we are in the same room as her. We get the impression that she is not used or comfortable with stairs as she hasn’t tried to go up or down in the house. She happily sleeps on the floor or sneakily jumps on a sofa at night-time. You hardly know she is there.
She enjoys her meals and has shown more interest in treats over the weeks. We noticed she has a bit of trouble crunching harder treats so we are keeping an eye on her teeth.
Whilst the first couple of weeks were a bit of a shock to Panda, she is gradually coming out of her shell. Having Baron as a companion has helped her lots to settle in. They seem to enjoy each other’s company and she has tried to play with Baron a few times. She also likes to explore shopping bags to check if there are any treats for her. She is yet to play with any toys but we know it took Baron several months to properly settle in.
Outside the house (including walks)
Panda walks really well on the lead. She is quite an inquisitive girl. She has a good nose for picking up scents and is very alert to wildlife noises. We have Panda on a harness which has proved beneficial when she met some smaller off-lead pugs recently. She was rather nervous and flighty. She should settle once she meets other breeds more regularly.
We take Panda and Baron on a weekly greyhound meet-up walk every Sunday lunchtime where she enjoys a long walk around the local country park with her new friends. She even gets spoilt with some liver cake which she loves.
Photos
Please see some photos below of Panda settling in. She has become part of our family and we love her to bits. She will continue to receive hugs on behalf of her previous owner.
All the best,
Steven
