I've read a few times on here about using a 'long lead'. How long is a long lead? Do you mean one of the retractable ones?
See I was always told that too long a lead isn't a good idea for greyhounds because of the speeds they can pick up and they can practically throttle themselves. However it would be nice for Whiz to have a bit of a run and I wondered what the current thinking was.

We've got a 10m one for Betty - a training lead - which we (or rather Colin) uses when we go for walks in the woods. Its taken a bit of practice to use but now we've got the hang of it. She is good on it. She doesn't pull on it and stops when she gets to the end. We got it to use when we go to the caravan. We got ours from Angela Nicky

we have a 10m training lead for apollo as we are trying to recall train him, we got it from the saddlery shop in ingatestone cos we didnt think to ask angela!? doh! I really wouldnt use one of the retractable ones personally, simply because i had a really bad experience with one which i used on my parents first grey. He saw a squirrel in the opposite direction, looped round the back of me and bolted for it. I ended up with very deep friction burns to the backs of both my legs (it was summer so i had shorts on and believe me they really killed and left me with lovely scars for years!!) and he virtually throttled himself and was very lucky not to do himself permanent damage. I know people do use these leads for houndies and if they are happy with them then thats fine, im not here to tell people what to do with their dogs, but after that experience i just wouldnt. Perhaps you could go to an enclosed secure area and let her have a run? there are apparently a few places across essex that loan out fields for exactly that purpose. the one in manningtree is the one most people talk about. good luck, hope you find something that works for you

I must admit that I'm not comfortable with the idea of the retractable ones. I would also like to teach him to come to me. He does most times at home in the garden, but if he's really interested in something else then I get ignored! Is it just like a lunge line if you got it from the saddlers? We're going to have access to a large field soon, just waiting for it to be secured, then he can run but I won't be going there everyday, so a long line will add to the interest of his normal walks.

yeah, just a normal lunge line (pretty purple ) he ws doing quite well with it, but we havent been able to take him out with it for a few weeks so we will prob be back to square one again when we do Would love to find an enclosed field that is close to me, im happy to travel for them, but if it were closer then we could go more often. just have to hope for a big lottery win i guess

How about the Millenium Park just off the A127. We've been there a couple of times so Betty can have a run, we've found her recall is rubbish at the moment. Nicky

The millenium park is off the A127 towards southend....there is a turn off to your right just before the asda/RBS roundabout, take that and just a few yards on your left there is the park! :-) there's parking down the roads around there (watch for doule yellows) the park is great Fun, me and bertie may be going today ;D

the only problem with that park is that it is ssoooooooo busy! and as we all know our houndies are rather easy to distract from what they are supposed to be doing at the best of times!

Sally gave me the name and contact for a man in Mistley who may still let ppl use his enclosed field for a fee, Gunna give him a ring now, if he allows it will put his details on the forum.

Just given him a ring. The field he says is huge and completely enclosed, the fees however are £5 for half hour, could get quite expensive on a regular basis. Going to see the field this afternoon and will ask if a few owners can get together to share the fee, will make it more affordable. If you would like to contact him yourself here is the link for his contact details and location www.brownbook.net/business/620531/old-hall-kennels

Thanks for that - do you book it just on your own normally? I will try and find out more info about the one at Sudbury.
